This book explores the meta-heuristics approach called tabu search, which is dramatically changing our ability to solve a hostof problems that stretch over the realms of resource planning,telecommunications, VLSI design, financial analysis, scheduling, spaceplanning, energy distribution, molecular engineering, logistics,pattern classification, flexible manufacturing, waste management,mineral exploration, biomedical analysis, environmental conservationand scores of other problems. Variable Neighborhood Search.

Boolean satisfiability is probably the most studied of the combinatorial optimization/search problems. Significant effort has been devoted to trying to provide practical solutions to this problem for problem instances encountered in a range of applications in electronic design automation (EDA), as well as in artificial intelligence (AI). This study has culminated in the development of several SAT packages, both proprietary and in the public domain (e.g. GRASP, SATO) which find significant use in both research and industry. Most existing complete solvers are variants of the Davis-Putnam (DP) search algorithm. In this paper we describe the development of a new complete solver, Chaff which achieves significant performance gains through careful engineering of all aspects of the search-especially a particularly efficient implementation of Boolean constraint propagation (BCP) and a novel low overhead decision strategy. Chaff has been able to obtain one to two orders of magnitude performance improvement on difficult SAT benchmarks in comparison with other solvers (DP or otherwise), including GRASP and SATO.

A Multiple Ant Colony System for Vehicle Routing Problems with Time Windows

This article describes Ant Systems, a meta-heuristic based on an ant foraging metaphor. The presentation of Ant Systems has been somewhat generalized by adding a ``Queen" process in charge of co-ordinating classical ``Ant" processes, so that recent Ant Systems can be naturally included while remaining close to the metaphor. To illustrate how Ant Systems are practically implemented, a number of applications to the quadratic assignment problem are reviewed.

This article introduces POPMUSIC, a meta-heuristic that has been successfully applied to various combinatorial optimization problems. This meta-heuristic is especially useful for designing heuristic methods for large combinatorial problems that can be partially optimized. The basic idea is to optimize sub-parts of solutions until a local optimum is reached. Implementations of the technique to large centroid clustering and to the problem of balancing mechanical parts are shown to be very efficient.

Popmusic — Partial Optimization Metaheuristic under Special Intensification Conditions

This article presents new heuristic methods for solving a class of hard centroid clustering problems including the p-median, the sum-of-squares clustering and the multi-source Weber problems. Centroid clustering is to partition a set of entities into a given number of subsets and to find the location of a centre for each subset in such a way that a dissimilarity measure between the entities and the centres is minimized. The first method proposed is a candidate list search that produces good solutions in a short amount of time if the number of centres in the problem is not too large. The second method is a general local optimization approach that finds very good solutions. The third method is designed for problems with a large number of centress it decomposes the problem into subproblems that are solved independently. Numerical results show that these methods are efficient—dozens of best solutions known to problem instances of the literature have been improved—and fast, handling problem instances with more than 85,000 entities and 15,000 centres—much larger than those solved in the literature. The expected complexity of these new procedures is discussed and shown to be comparable to that of an existing method which is known to be very fast.
