TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of the Terephthalyl/Isophthalyl isomers (T/I) ratio on the vitreous phase is investigated by combining differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis.
Abstract: Poly ether ketone ketone (PEKK) with different proportion of meta phenyl links were investigated by combining differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. The influence of the Terephthalyl/Isophthalyl isomers (T/I) ratio on the vitreous phase is mild, the shift of the glass transition is limited to a few degrees and the vitreous G0 is only sensitive to the content of the crystalline phase. Contrarily, the increase of meta isomers is responsible for a significant decrease of the melting temperature (Tm) by 60 8C, which considerably facilitates processing. The modification of interchain interactions in the crystalline phase might be implied. A series of thermal protocols evidenced that the difference of crystallization behavior is also dependent upon the T/I isomer ratio. A time and temperature dependence of annealing on the double melting behavior of PEKK was observed. Regarding the mechanical behavior, the observed reinforcing effect due to the crystalline phase was more prominent in the rubbery state than in the glassy state.

TL;DR: In this paper, high-performance conductive thermoplastic composites poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK)/silver nanowires were elaborated by melt blending.
Abstract: High-performance conductive thermoplastic composites poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK)/silver nanowires were elaborated by melt blending. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) with high aspect ratio (ξ~220) were elaborated through the polyol process in presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and ethylene glycol. Scanning electron microscopy observations of nanowires were performed after an adapted cleaning process. The dispersion of NWs in the polymeric matrixwas evaluated. A very lowpercolation threshold of 0.6 vol% was obtained. Electrical conductivity values obtained above the percolation threshold were among the highest measured for low-filled conductive polymer composites. The influence of AgNWs on the PEKK matrix has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analyses. It is important to note that thermal and dynamic mechanical performances of the polymeric matrix were preserved in composites.

TL;DR: This Review presents a comprehensive review of the use of ferroelectric polymers, especially PVDF and PVDF-based copolymers/blends as potential components in dielectric nanocomposite materials for high energy density capacitor applications.
Abstract: Dielectric polymer nanocomposites are rapidly emerging as novel materials for a number of advanced engineering applications. In this Review, we present a comprehensive review of the use of ferroelectric polymers, especially PVDF and PVDF-based copolymers/blends as potential components in dielectric nanocomposite materials for high energy density capacitor applications. Various parameters like dielectric constant, dielectric loss, breakdown strength, energy density, and flexibility of the polymer nanocomposites have been thoroughly investigated. Fillers with different shapes have been found to cause significant variation in the physical and electrical properties. Generally, one-dimensional and two-dimensional nanofillers with large aspect ratios provide enhanced flexibility versus zero-dimensional fillers. Surface modification of nanomaterials as well as polymers adds flavor to the dielectric properties of the resulting nanocomposites. Nowadays, three-phase nanocomposites with either combination of fillers...

TL;DR: The principal objective of this review is to summarize the present knowledge on the use, advances, advantages and weaknesses of a large number of experimental techniques that are available for the characterization of nanoparticles.
Abstract: Nanostructures have attracted huge interest as a rapidly growing class of materials for many applications. Several techniques have been used to characterize the size, crystal structure, elemental composition and a variety of other physical properties of nanoparticles. In several cases, there are physical properties that can be evaluated by more than one technique. Different strengths and limitations of each technique complicate the choice of the most suitable method, while often a combinatorial characterization approach is needed. In addition, given that the significance of nanoparticles in basic research and applications is constantly increasing, it is necessary that researchers from separate fields overcome the challenges in the reproducible and reliable characterization of nanomaterials, after their synthesis and further process (e.g. annealing) stages. The principal objective of this review is to summarize the present knowledge on the use, advances, advantages and weaknesses of a large number of experimental techniques that are available for the characterization of nanoparticles. Different characterization techniques are classified according to the concept/group of the technique used, the information they can provide, or the materials that they are destined for. We describe the main characteristics of the techniques and their operation principles and we give various examples of their use, presenting them in a comparative mode, when possible, in relation to the property studied in each case.

TL;DR: Strain is the response to the stress of liquids, solids and substances in between the former two that if a stress is applied to them, they will strain.
Abstract: Common to liquids, solids and substances in between the former two is that if a stress is applied to them, they will strain. Stress may be visualized by placing a small amount of fluid between two parallel plates. When one plate slides over the other, forces act on the fluid dependent upon the rate of the plate movement. This causes a shear stress on the liquid. Recall laminar flow of fluids through a tubular vessel. Strain is the response to the stress. If solids are elastic, they deform and return to their original shape. Since fluids are not elastic and, hence, viscous, their deformation is irreversible.
