Characterization and engineering of a two-enzyme system for plastics depolymerization.
Brandon C. Knott,Erika Erickson,Mark D. Allen,Japheth E. Gado,Rosie Graham,Fiona L. Kearns,Isabel Pardo,Ece Topuzlu,Jared J. Anderson,Harry P. Austin,Graham Dominick,Christopher W. Johnson,Nicholas A. Rorrer,Caralyn J. Szostkiewicz,Valérie Copié,Christina M. Payne,H. Lee Woodcock,Bryon S. Donohoe,Gregg T. Beckham,John McGeehan +19 more
TL;DR: The characterization of the MHETase enzyme and synergy of the two-enzyme PET depolymerization system may inform enzyme cocktail-based strategies for plastics upcycling and will inform future efforts in the biological deconstruction andUpcycling of mixed plastics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Techno-economic, life-cycle, and socioeconomic impact analysis of enzymatic recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate)
Avantika Singh,Nicholas A. Rorrer,Scott R. Nicholson,Erika Erickson,Jason S. DesVeaux,Andre Fernandes Tomon Avelino,Patrick Lamers,Arpit Bhatt,Yimin Zhang,Greg Avery,Ling Tao,Andrew R. Pickford,Alberta Carpenter,John McGeehan,Gregg T. Beckham +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present process modeling, techno-economic, life-cycle, and socioeconomic impact analyses for an enzymatic PET depolymerization-based recycling process, which they compare with virgin TPA manufacturing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intracellular pathways for lignin catabolism in white-rot fungi.
Carlos del Cerro,Erika Erickson,Tao Dong,Allison R. Wong,Elizabeth K. Eder,Samuel O. Purvine,Hugh D. Mitchell,Karl K. Weitz,Lye Meng Markillie,Meagan C. Burnet,David W. Hoyt,Rosalie K. Chu,Jan Fang Cheng,Kelsey J. Ramirez,Rui Katahira,Wei Xiong,Michael E. Himmel,Venkataramanan Subramanian,Jeffrey G. Linger,Davinia Salvachúa +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employ 13C-isotope labeling, systems biology approaches, and in vitro enzyme assays to demonstrate that two white-rot fungi, Trametes versicolor and Gelatoporia subvermispora, funnel carbon from lignin-derived aromatic compounds into central carbon metabolism via intracellular catabolic pathways.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative Performance of PETase as a Function of Reaction Conditions, Substrate Properties, and Product Accumulation.
Erika Erickson,Thomas J. Shakespeare,Felicia Bratti,Bonnie L. Buss,Rosie Graham,McKenzie A. Hawkins,Gerhard König,William E. Michener,Joel Miscall,Kelsey J. Ramirez,Nicholas A. Rorrer,Michael Zahn,Andrew R. Pickford,John McGeehan,Gregg T. Beckham +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the performance of the wild-type and variant enzymes was compared as a function of temperature, substrate morphology, and reaction mixture composition, and it was shown that reaction temperature had the strongest influence on performance between the two enzymes.
