Objective. To analyze the social construction of stigma and discrimination processes associated with HIV/AIDS and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA), based on the perceptions of health care providers in three states of the Mexican Republic. Material and Methods. Qualitative and quantitative description. Observation at nine institutions; in-depth interviews (14) and surveys (373) directed to providers of health services. Results. Seventy-five percent of providers reported having received training related to HIV/AIDS; however, notions persist as to patients being hopeless; discrimination due to the idea of risk groups; the immediate identification of living with the virus, having the syndrome and death; and specific lack of knowledge of forms of transmission. Twenty-three percent would not buy food from a PLHA and 16% think they should be banned from public services. With respect to confidentiality: 89% believe it should be maintained and 38% think that employers and administrators have the right to know about their employees’ condition. Isolation, notes in clinical histories pointing to HIV, obligatory testing and delays in surgeries for PLHA were constant practices. The Rio dos Sinos watershed is located in the eastern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and includes 32municipalities. These municipalities develop several different economic activities such as farming and livestock along the 190 km length of the Rio dos Sinos, one of the rivers with the worst quality of water in Brazil. The region is also characterised by growing urbanisation and heavy industrialisation. The main economic activity is the leather and footwear industry. This diversified land use puts the Rio dos Sinos watershed at risk of a wide range of potential environmental impacts. The aim of the present article is to discuss the socioeconomic process currently implemented in the Rio dos Sinos watershed and the effect of these human actions on the environmental quality described throughout this special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Biology.

The Rio dos Sinos watershed: an economic and social space and its interface with environmental status.

El objeto de esta colaboracion es mostrar algunos rasgos a proposito de como los jovenes se presentan ante los otros a traves de los procesos de comunicacion interpersonal con mediacion tecnologica. En primer lugar se abordan las transformaciones operadas por la mediacion tecnologica en los procesos de comunicacion interpersonal; en segundo lugar se plantea la cuestion de la identidad y el anonimato en la red, cuales son las implicaciones de Internet en terminos de autenticidad y como se experimenta y se juega dicha identidad con relacion a algunos escenarios de la vida cotidiana. Se trata de un estudio exploratorio cuyos resultados se han obtenido a partir de un cuestionario realizado a 360 jovenes universitarios usuarios de Internet, en 2008.

La presentacion de la persona en la vida cotidiana describe en detalle una perspectiva sociologia original desde la cual es posible estudiar la vida social, especialmente el tipo de vida social organizado dentro de los limites fisicos de un establecimiento o una planta industrial: la perspectiva de la actuacion o representacion teatral. Dejando a un lado las insuficiencias obvias de este modelo analogico, Erving Goffman se ha propuesto considerar de que manera el individuo se presenta y presenta se actividad ante otros en las situaciones de trabajo corriente, como guia y controla la impresion que los otros se forman de el, y que tipo de cosas puede y no puede hacer mientras actua ante ellos. La prueba mas contundente del exito de la tarea emprendida por el autor es, sin lugar a dudas, la vigencia de esta obra, la cual, publicada por primera vez en 1959, logro constituirse en un verdadero clasico en su genero.
