Collaboration between philanthropic foundations and government

Abstract: Purpose – The aim of this paper is to examine collaboration between the government and philanthropic foundations in the age of new governance. This focuses on analysing the relationship that was formed between PFs and the government in Israel during the development and operation of two joint projects initiated by PFs, which aimed to promote collaboration between the two sectors in the fields of children at risk and the public education system. Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative, thematic content analysis was used to study the relationships that emerged between the PFs and the government. Data were collected from an examination of documented materials and interviews with key participants in the two projects from both parties. Findings – The article presents the interface between government and philanthropic foundations in the age of new governance. Self-Reported Likelihood of Seeking Social Worker Help Among Older Men in Israel:

Abstract: The current study assessed the association between demographic factors (age, relationship status, and education), psychosocial factors (self-rated health and self-reported loneliness), and factors related to attitudes and behaviors associated with seeking help (prior experience with social workers, attitudes towards social workers, and the stigma attached to seeking help from social workers, and the self-reported likelihood of seeking social workers' help among older men in Israel. The data were collected through structured questionnaires, administered to a sample of 256 older men. The findings indicated several avoidance factors which might discourage older men from seeking social worker help. Older men who are more educated, experience less loneliness, report lower self-rated health, have no prior experience with social workers, have less positive attitudes towards social workers and higher stigma attached to seeking social workers' help, are less likely to seek social workers' help. The research conclusion is that it is important to develop tools and interventions aimed at helping older men deal with such avoidance factors affecting their tendency to refrain from seeking social worker help, as well as to develop practices adapted to their unique needs.

The iron cage re-revisited: Institutional isomorphism in non-profit organisations in South Africa

Abstract: Non-profit organisations (NPOs) are being pushed to become ‘more business-like’, reflecting global discourse on ‘aid effectiveness’ underpinned by managerialist modes of thinking that may be inappropriate to local contexts. We examine the nature of the tendency towards institutional isomorphism, critiquing it through a Postcolonial lens, and empirically investigating this with twelve NPOs in South Africa’s Eastern and Western Capes. The study suggests that NPOs mimic such professed ‘best practice’ in order to secure funding, while resistance creates hybrid management forms in line with local humanistic objectives. A cross-cultural management focus contributes here to both theory and praxis.
