TL;DR: Les ombres noires de Saint Domingue: The Impact of Black Women on Gender a Racial Boundaries in Eighteenth-and Nineteenth-Century France by Robin Mitchell as discussed by the authors explores how public discourse about them fostered specific aspects of French national identity.
Abstract: Author(s): Mitchell, Robin | Advisor(s): Stovall, Tyler | Abstract: AbstractLes ombres noires de Saint Domingue: The Impact of Black Women on Gender a Racial Boundaries in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century FrancebyRobin MitchellDoctor of Philosophy in HistoryUniversity of California, BerkeleyProfessor Tyler Stovall, ChairThere were few black women on French soil in the nineteenth century, yet images of and discussions about them are found in political, artistic, scientific, and various social milieus. This paradox is explored for its symbolic and nationalistic significance by investigating how public discourse about them fostered specific aspects of French national identity. The loss by revolution of the black colony of Saint Domingue (Haiti) created an influx of refugees that haunted France. Specific types of representations of black women helped mitigate this national trauma.Using data collected from archives, art, literature, and legislation, as well as social, scientific, and political discourse, the lives and public representation of four very real black women from late eighteenth-century Saint Domingue through the abolition of slavery in 1848 - including the ancien regime, the Napoleonic era, and the Restoration of monarchy - are examined for their role in the construction of French social, sexual and racial identity. The opening overview examines racial policies important for keeping whites and non-whites legally distinct - exacerbated by the loose control of mores in colonial Saint Domingue. The legal case of Henriette Lucille tested the claim that slavery did not exist on French soil, exposing how individual attitudes were undermining royal authority. Sarah Bartmann, the Hottentot Venus, was used by the scientific community to quantify race, as well as by the white French public to witness its superiority over blacks. Ourika was a very young black girl given to an aristocratic woman as a house pet. She was, however, raised in the household as an aristocrat. Though she died young, her reputation became the subject of literary and theater works that emphasized the impossibility of her marrying a white French man of her own class. Last, Jeanne Duval, common-law wife of Charles Baudelaire is seen through the record of her life left by him and their contemporaries as well as his later biographers - an ugly portrait of a mulatto of base behavior unworthy of the poetic genius whom she inspired.Exposed is the way that race was utilized - along with gender, sexuality and class - to encourage unity amongst white French men and women, highlighting why these black women were such important tools in that national quest. Regardless of who they were or where they came from, the overarching narrative was the reinforcement of the inauthentic Frenchness of black women. Yet the representations of them also reveal the fissures in the definition of what it meant to be French that challenged existing gender and racial boundaries within white French society.

TL;DR: In this paper, Chabal's detailed study shows how passionate debates over citizenship, immigration, colonial memory, the reform of the state and the historiography of modern France have galvanized the French elite and created new spaces for discussion and disagreement.
Abstract: This book is an original and sophisticated historical interpretation of contemporary French political culture. Until now, there have been few attempts to understand the political consequences of the profound geopolitical, intellectual and economic changes that France has undergone since the 1970s. However, Emile Chabal's detailed study shows how passionate debates over citizenship, immigration, colonial memory, the reform of the state and the historiography of modern France have galvanised the French elite and created new spaces for discussion and disagreement. Many of these debates have coalesced around two political languages - republicanism and liberalism - both of which structure the historical imagination and the symbolic vocabulary of French political actors. The tension between these two political languages has become the central battleground of contemporary French politics. It is around these two poles that politicians, intellectuals and members of France's vast civil society have tried to negotiate the formidable challenges of ideological uncertainty and a renewed sense of global insecurity.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors claim that the transfer of knowledge represents much more than merely another addition to the art and science of cuisine: it is its essential completion, as gastronomy moves more and more toward the ideal of a total multisensory art, as captivating for the eye as it is for the palate.
Abstract: At a time when a growing number of chefs and innovative food industries are starting to set up their own research kitchens and work with renowned scientists, it is surprising to see that issues related to the visual presentation of food on the plate are being left out of these successful exchanges. The variety of presentations created by chefs, and the number of varieties of tableware now available to achieve them, represent a formidable opportunity for cognitive scientists to study the more complex effects of vision on food experiences, which certainly should not be missed. Chefs can also benefit from the new insights that a scientific approach can bring to these areas, which previously have often been left to intuition. In this manifesto, we claim that this transfer of knowledge represents much more than merely another addition to the art and science of cuisine: it is its essential completion, as gastronomy moves more and more toward the ideal of a total multisensory art, as captivating for the eye as it is for the palate. Before turning to the scientific recommendations and review in the second part of our manifesto, we want to promote a different approach to plating, which breaks with the more functional and decorative purposes of plate ware, and puts experiments in visual presentation at the heart of modernist culinary expression.
