Abstract: The virtual fields method has been developed for extracting constitutive parameters from full-field measurements provided by optical non-contact techniques for instance. It is based on the principle of virtual work written with some particular virtual fields. This paper can be regarded as a general review summarising some 15 years of developments of this method. The main aspects of the method are first recalled in the case of both linear and non-linear constitutive equations. They are then illustrated by some recent relevant examples. Some studies underway as well as relevant issues to be addressed in the near future are eventually discussed.

Abstract: The Virtual Fields Method (VFM) is one of the techniques developed to identify the parameters governing constitutive equations, the experimental data processed for this purpose being displacement or strain fields. It will be shown in this chapter that one of its main advantages is the fact that, in several cases, the sought parameters can be directly found from the measurements, without the need of calculating the stress with a numerical tool such as a finite element programme.

Abstract: With the rapid spread in use of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) globally, it is important there be some standard methods of verifying and validating DIC codes. To this end, the DIC Challenge board was formed and is maintained under the auspices of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) and the international DIC society (iDICs). The goal of the DIC Board and the 2D–DIC Challenge is to supply a set of well-vetted sample images and a set of analysis guidelines for standardized reporting of 2D–DIC results from these sample images, as well as for comparing the inherent accuracy of different approaches and for providing users with a means of assessing their proper implementation. This document will outline the goals of the challenge, describe the image sets that are available, and give a comparison between 12 commercial and academic 2D–DIC codes using two of the challenge image sets.

Abstract: A fast-Fourier-transform method of topography and interferometry is proposed. By computer processing of a noncontour type of fringe pattern, automatic discrimination is achieved between elevation and depression of the object or wave-front form, which has not been possible by the fringe-contour-generation techniques. The method has advantages over moire topography and conventional fringe-contour interferometry in both accuracy and sensitivity. Unlike fringe-scanning techniques, the method is easy to apply because it uses no moving components.
