This meta-analysis reviews 208 laboratory studies of acute psychological stressors and tests a theoretical model delineating conditions capable of eliciting cortisol responses. Psychological stressors increased cortisol levels; however, effects varied widely across tasks. Consistent with the theoretical model, motivated performance tasks elicited cortisol responses if they were uncontrollable or characterized by social-evaluative threat (task performance could be negatively judged by others), when methodological factors and other stressor characteristics were controlled for. Tasks containing both uncontrollable and social-evaluative elements were associated with the largest cortisol and adrenocorticotropin hormone changes and the longest times to recovery. These findings are consistent with the animal literature on the physiological effects of uncontrollable social threat and contradict the belief that cortisol is responsive to all types of stressors.

Acute stressors and cortisol responses: a theoretical integration and synthesis of laboratory research.

Research on the forgiveness of self has largely focused on less severe, more common types of offenses among samples within developed westernized nations. In this brief report of a study within a developing nation in Africa, applications of self-forgiveness are extended to incarcerated people. The sample comprised N = 310 males (83.87%) and females (16.13%) who were incarcerated in a medium-security Ghanaian prison (Mage = 39.35, SDage = 13.28). Participants completed measures of self-forgiveness, shame-proneness, and guilt-proneness. Prison records were examined for criminal history details. We hypothesized that self-forgiveness would correlate negatively with shame-proneness and positively with guilt-proneness. We tentatively hypothesized that this association would be moderated by offense type. Self-forgiveness correlated with both shame- and guilt-proneness in the hypothesized direction. However, neither association was moderated by type of offense. The findings offer further evidence on the salience of self-conscious emotions in forgiving oneself, particularly among incarcerated offender populations. We discuss the implications of the findings for enhancing offender rehabilitation initiatives.

Self-Forgiveness Among Incarcerated Individuals in Ghana: Relations With Shame- and Guilt-Proneness.

In this chapter, we seek to address this dilemma. No amount of training can 
fully prepare a psychotherapist for the unique dynamics that result from the 
interaction of cultural identities, both visible and invisible, within each psychotherapeutic dyad. These dialogues can be perceived as threatening and have 
the potential to arouse feelings of dread, anxiety, anger, and frustration, which 
can disrupt communication and behaviors (Sue, 2013). The experience of emotionality and anxiety in the face of cultural difference can be all too common 
among people, regardless of context. That said, in the intimate, “protected” psychotherapy setting, even the most culturally oriented psychotherapists are not 
capable of addressing all situations in the exact way that their clients need or 
want. Despite the relaxed and unassuming stance certain psychotherapists take 
in psychotherapy, their reactions or attempts to initiate cultural conversations 
can at times be inattentive to or mistaken about clients’ feelings. As a result, 
cultural misunderstandings or ruptures can occur when psychotherapists make 
assumptions or overgeneralize about the ways that culture influences clients’ 
day-to-day experiences. Although psychotherapists may be well meaning andhave positive intentions, they sometimes are unable to navigate the depth and 
subsequent influence of their own biases.

Microaggressions and Cultural Humility in Psychotherapy

On its face, self-forgiveness sounds like something that an individual should do best. Individuals can work alone to bring about self-forgiveness, as has been illustrated by several interventions that aim to promote self-forgiveness using self-directed workbooks or individual psychotherapy. Only one existing intervention uses a group—a psychoeducational group within treatment for alcohol abuse. However, group treatment has advantages. First, the self is socially constructed, and therefore, we can change the self through social interactions. Second, therapeutic factors of group therapy can be used in self-forgiveness groups. Six interventions have been developed and tested. Those are reviewed in depth. We suggest that they can be used in psychoeducational or group therapy formats to promote self-forgiveness. We suggest a best-practices model for group psychotherapy, and we identify future research and clinical applications.
