Journal ArticleDOI
Complex biogeographic history of a Holarctic passerine.
Sergei V. Drovetski,Robert M. Zink,Sievert Rohwer,Igor V. Fadeev,Evgeniy V. Nesterov,Igor Karagodin,Evgeniy A. Koblik,Yaroslav A. Red'kin +7 more
TL;DR: The winter wren has a much greater degree of inter– and intracontinental differentiation than the three other Holarctic birds studied to date—dunlin, common raven and three–toed woodpecker—and represents an example of cryptic speciation that has been overlooked.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mitochondrial phylogeny of Locustella and related genera
Sergei V. Drovetski,Sergei V. Drovetski,Robert M. Zink,Igor V. Fadeev,Evgeniy V. Nesterov,Evgeniy A. Koblik,Yaroslav A. Red'kin,Sievert Rohwer +7 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that a phylogenetic analysis of morphology and ecological preferences would show that the current taxonomy of grass and bush warblers reflects species’ habitat preferences and morphology related to locomotion and foraging in their habitats, rather than their shared ancestry.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mitochondrial DNA and plumage evolution in the white wagtail Motacilla alba
Alexandra Pavlova,Robert M. Zink,Sievert Rohwer,Evgeniy A. Koblik,Yaroslav A. Red'kin,Igor V. Fadeev,Evgeniy V. Nesterov +6 more
TL;DR: Zink et al. as mentioned in this paper analyzed sequences of two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene regions (controlregion and ND2) totaling 1477 base-pairs from 232 specimens of the white wagtailMotacilla alba obtained from 27 localities throughout Eurasia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Asymmetric Nuclear Introgression, Introgressive Mitochondrial Sweep, and Purifying Selection on Phylogenetic Reconstruction and Divergence Estimates in the Pacific Clade of Locustella Warblers
Sergei V. Drovetski,Georgy A. Semenov,Yaroslav A. Red'kin,Vladimir N. Sotnikov,Igor V. Fadeev,Evgeniy A. Koblik +5 more
TL;DR: The multilocus nuDNA species tree resolved all inter- and intraspecific relationships despite substantial introgression, and the node ages on the species tree may be underestimated as suggested by the differences in node age estimates based on non-introgressing mtDNA and introgressing nuDNA.
Journal ArticleDOI
A test of the European Pleistocene refugial paradigm, using a Western Palaearctic endemic bird species.
Sergei V. Drovetski,Igor V. Fadeev,Marko Raković,Ricardo Lopes,Giovanni Boano,Marco Pavia,Evgeniy A. Koblik,Yuriy V. Lohman,Yaroslav A. Red'kin,Sargis A. Aghayan,Sandra Reis,Sofya S. Drovetskaya,Gary Voelker +12 more
TL;DR: The results support Hewitt's paradigm for effects of Pleistocene glaciations on European populations and suggest that in highly dispersive taxa, isolation of neighbouring refugia was incomplete, resulting in large super-refugial populations.
