Abstract: Abstract Agronomic biofortification is one of the approaches which have been successfully adopted for improving the nutritional content of plant-based foods and is mainly focused on optimizing the application of mineral fertilizers and/or the improvement of the solubilization and mobilization of mineral elements in the soil. In general, mineral elements with a good dynamism in the soil and in the plant are good candidates for a prosperous agronomic biofortification. Selenium deficiency occurs in areas where soil Se is low, including parts of Europe, China, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Africa. Selenium toxicity occurs in areas where soil Se is naturally high, including areas of China, India, and the United States. Toxicity from naturally occurring Se may be intensified by irrigation of seleniferous soils, mining, and use of Se-rich fossil fuels. Then, management practices benefit from a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of plant Se uptake and the fate of Se in different plant species.

Abstract: After its discovery, selenium was most noted for its harmful effects. Selenium was the first element identified to occur in native vegetation at levels toxic to animals. Poisoning of animals can occur through consumption of plants containing toxic levels of selenium. Livestock consuming excessive amounts of selenized forages are afflicted with “alkali disease” and “blind staggers”. Typical symptoms of these diseases include loss of hair, deformed hooves, blindness, colic, diarrhoea, lethargy, increased heart and respiration rates, and eventually death. On the other hand, selenium deficiency in animal feeds can cause “white muscle disease”, a degenerative disease of the cardiac and skeletal muscles. In this regard, this review paper attempts to summarize the essentiality of selenium for humans, animals, and plants and the role of selenium in plant metabolism and physiology.

Abstract: Abstract Humans and animals require a multitude of nutrients in order to have a properly functioning body for purposes of growth, development and metabolism. Plant-based foods have represented one of the most important nutrient sources in human diet since the beginning of mankind. But nowadays the amount of arable land is being reduced and much of the natural resources already in use show signs of degradation. Also, staple crops (i.e. plants that constitute the main food in the diets of people in developing countries, e.g. wheat, rice, maize, and cassava) regrettably contain low amounts of micronutrients, making them insufficient to meet the minimum daily requirements. Shortages in mineral micronutrients, including iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), and iodine (I), are affecting more than half of the world’s population. In this case, it is fundamental to improve strategies that let us make plant foods more efficient and with higher micronutrient amounts and bioavailability concerning their edible textures. In this regard, in this review paper, we tried to summarize selenium availability and its application in the soil, plant and food systems to understand the place of selenium in plant-based foods.

Abstract: In addition to the often-cited advantages of using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system in plant biological research (1), Arabidopsis has many additional characteristics that make it an attractive experimental organism for studying lea d (Pb) accumulation and tolerance in plants. These include its fortuitous familial relationship to many known metal hyperaccumulators (Brassicaceae), as well as similar Pbaccumulation patterns to most other plants. Using nutrient-agar plates, hydroponic culture, and Pb-contaminated soils as growth media, we found significant variation in Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes in accumulation and tolerance of Pb. In addition, we have found that Pb accumulation is not obligatorily linked with Pb tolerance, suggesti ng that different genetic factors control these two processes. We also screened ethyl methanesulfonate-mutagenized M2 populations and identified several Pb-accumulating mutants. Current characterization of these mutants indicates that their phenotypes are likely due to alteration of general metal ion uptake or translocation processes since these mutants also accumulate many other metals in shoots. We expect that further characterization of the ecotypes and mutants will shed light on the basic genetic and physiological underpinnings of plant-based Pb remediation. 7. Bacteria and plants might be used to enhance remediation of soil pollutants in situ. This study assessed the potential of bacteria (12 isolates), plants (16 forage grasses), and plant-bacteria associations (selected pairings) to remediate 2-chlorobenzoic acid (2CBA)-contaminated soil. Initially, grass viability was assessed in 2CBA-contaminated soil. Soil was contaminated wi th 2CBA, forage grasses were grown under growth chamber conditions for 42 or 60 d, and the 2CBA concentration in soil was determined by gas chromatography. Only five of 16 forage grasses grew in 2CBA-treated (816 mg/kg) soil. Growth of Bromus inermis had no effect on 2CBA concentration, whereas Agropyron intermedium, B. biebersteinii, A. riparum, and Elymus dauricus decreased 2CBA relative to nonplanted control soil by 32 to 42%. Abstract: Nanotechnology is an emerging science with a wide array of applications involving the synthesis and manipulation of materials with dimensions in the range of 1-100 nm. Nanotechnological applications include diverse fields such as pharmaceuticals, medicine, the environment, food processing and agriculture. Regarding the latter, applications are mainly focused on plant growth and crop protection against plagues and diseases. In recent years, the biogenic reduction of elements such as Ag, Au, Cu, Cd, Al, Se, Zn, Ce, Ti and Fe with plant extracts has become one of the most accepted techniques for obtaining nanoparticles (NPs), as it is considered an ecological and cost-effective process without the use of chemical contaminants. The objective of this work was to review NPs synthesized by green chemistry using vegetable extracts, as well as their use as antimicrobial agents against phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria. Given the need for alternatives to control and integrate management of phytopathogens, this review is relevant to agriculture, although this technology is barely exploited in this field. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract: Selenium is an essential element since it is necessary for metabolism and is also toxic to the living things if it is consumed above the desirable limit. For instance, up to 40 µg per d of dietary selenium is essential for human health; however, consumption of a little over 400 µg per d could result in adverse physiological problems. In the environment, selenium occurs in different species; of which selenate and selenite are its most toxic forms accounting for 95% of selenium toxicity. Though, selenium fortification is important for normal human physiology in selenium deficient environments, it needs to be minimized or removed from selenium rich environmental media. Thus, its quantification is significantly important to control per limit. Currently there is advancement in the detection and quantification of selenium in environmental including the use of a Hydride Generating Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Due to the excess occurrences of selenium in different locations the removal techniques from geogenic or anthropogenic sources include microbial metabolism, phytoremediation, sorption, membrane separation, coagulation, ion exchange and catalytic reduction. Most of all, the microbial removal is applied in drinking water supply and in selenium recovery from wastewater sludge. Though current selenium removal from sorption studies reported better efficiency, phytoremediation appears attractive due to its field scale application advantage. However, the fate of selenium following phytoremediation remains unaddressed.

Abstract: Selenium is a trace element necessary for the growth of organisms. Moreover, selenium supplementation can improve the immunity and fertility of the body, as well as its ability to resist oxidation, tumors, heavy metals, and pathogenic microorganisms. However, owing to the duality of selenium, excessive selenium supplementation can cause certain toxic effects on the growth and development of the body and may even result in death in severe cases. At present, increasing attention is being paid to the development and utilization of selenium as a micronutrient, but its potential toxicity tends to be neglected. This study systematically reviews recent research on the toxicological effects of selenium, aiming to provide theoretical references for selenium toxicology-related research and theoretical support for the development of selenium-containing drugs, selenium-enriched dietary supplements, and selenium-enriched foods.

Abstract: Selenium (Se) enrichment of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni can serve a dual purpose, on the one hand to increase plant biomass and stress tolerance and on the other hand to produce Se fortified plant-based food. Foliar Se spraying (0, 6, 8, 10 mg/L selenate, 14 days) of Stevia plantlets resulted in slightly decreased stevioside and rebaudioside A concentrations, and it also caused significant increment in stem elongation, leaf number, and Se content, suggesting that foliar Se supplementation can be used as a biofortifying approach. Furthermore, Se slightly limited photosynthetic CO2 assimilation (AN, gsw, Ci/Ca), but exerted no significant effect on chlorophyll, carotenoid contents and on parameters associated with photosystem II (PSII) activity (FV/FM, F0, Y(NO)), indicating that Se causes no photodamage in PSII. Further results indicate that Se is able to activate PSI-cyclic electron flow independent protection mechanisms of the photosynthetic apparatus of Stevia plants. The applied Se activated superoxide dismutase (SOD) isoenzymes (MnSOD1, FeSOD1, FeSOD2, Cu/ZnSOD1, Cu/ZnSOD2) and down-regulated NADPH oxidase suggesting the Se-induced limitation of superoxide anion levels and consequent oxidative signalling in Stevia leaves. Additionally, the decrease in S-nitrosoglutathione reductase protein abundance and the intensification of protein tyrosine nitration indicate Se-triggered nitrosative signalling. Collectively, these results suggest that Se supplementation alters Stevia shoot morphology without significantly affecting biomass yield and photosynthesis, but increasing Se content and performing antioxidant effects, which indicates that foliar application of Se may be a promising method in Stevia cultivation.
