The electronic properties and stereochemistry of mono-nuclear complexes of the copper(II) ion

In this paper we shall review the theoretical and experimental results obtained on simple magnetic model systems. We shall consider the Heisenberg, XY and Ising type of interaction (ferro and antiferromagnetic), on magnetic lattices of dimensionality 1, 2 and 3. Particular attention will be paid to the approximation of these model systems in real crystals, viz. how they can be realized or be expected to exist in nature. A large number of magnetic compounds which, according to the available experimental information, meet the requirements set by one or the other of the various models are considered and their properties discussed. Many examples will be given that demonstrate to what extent experiments on simple magnetic systems support theoretical descriptions of magnetic ordering phenomena and contribute to their understanding. As a preliminary to the structural determination of chromous acetate, it was decided to study the much more stable cupric acetate Cu(CH3COO)2.H2O during the early X-ray investigations. Both these compounds are monoclinic with space group (C2/c, and their unit-cell dimensions, determined from X-ray measurements and given herewith, are almost identical.

X-Ray Evidence for Metal-to-Metal Bonds in Cupric and Chromous Acetate

Crystals of chromous acetate are monoclinic with space group C2/c. The unit cell, of dimensions a = 13.15, b =-8.55, c = 13.94 A, fl ~--117 ° 0', contains four Cr2(CttaCOO)4.2H20 molecules. Projections of the structure on two crystallographic planes are given and from these it is inferred that chromous and cupric acetate are isostructural. The most striking feature of the structure is the close approach of 2.64 /~ between the two chromium atoms in a molecule, which, as in the case of the cupric acetate structure, suggests direct interaction between such atoms.
