Understanding damage and failure of composite materials is critical for reliable and cost-effective engineering design. Nonlinear free vibration of piezoelectric laminated composite plate

Third-order shear deformation theories of laminated composite shells are developed using the strain–displacement relations of Donnell and Sanders theories. These theories also account for geometric nonlinearity in the von Karman sense. Analytical (Navier) solutions for vibration suppression in cross-ply laminated composite shells with surface mounted smart material layers are developed using the linear versions of the two shell theories and for simply supported boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented to bring out the parametric effects of shell types (cylindrical, spherical, and doubly curved shells) and material properties on vibration suppression. A simple negative velocity feedback control in a closed loop is used.

Vibration suppression of laminated shell structures investigated using higher order shear deformation theory

We used the generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method to compute the transient response of thermal stresses and center displacement in laminated magnetostrictive plates under thermal vibration. We obtained the GDQ solutions in a three-layer (0° m /90°/0) and a 10-layer (0° m /90°/0°/90°/0) s laminated magnetostrictive plate with four simply supported edges. We presented the transient responses of thermal stress and center displacement with and without velocity feedback control, respectively. The advantage of the GDQ method used provide us with an efficient method to compute the results including shear deformation effect with a few grid points. These GDQ results had its potential that could be used and considered as basic data in the future magnetostrictive laminate studies.

In this article an efficient 3-D continuum damage mechanics formulation for composite laminates and its implementation into a finite element model that is based on the first order shear deformation theory of laminates are described. In the damage formulation each composite ply is treated as a homogeneous orthotropic material that can exhibit orthotropic damage in the form of distributed microscopic cracks that are normal to the three principal material directions. This type of damage is efficiently described by a symmetric second order tensor field that serves as an evolving internal variable within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. The damage tensor is continuous within each material ply of a given element, but can be discontinuous across material layer boundaries and inter-element boundaries. An Efficient Continuum Damage Model and its Application to Shear Deformable Laminated Plates

Kinetic energy of an inert projectile or its fragment can cause considerable damage to soft tissues and cause debilitating injuries or fatalities. The primary aim of threat mitigation due to kinetic energy dissipation is to provide adequate protection against projectiles or fragments in the form of body shields. Recently, novel nanocomposite materials reinforced with nanotubes are used as shields to protect the soft-tissues during impact. Soft tissues constitute an important part of human body performing various mechanical functions and a deep understanding of the behavior of soft tissue is required to characterize its response to external mechanical forces. Soft tissues are non-homogenous anisotropic materials, and their properties are dependent on the the physiological structure. In this paper, a multiscale homogenization-based analysis of the constituent properties of soft tissues and underlying endoskeleton are developed for impact mitigation using nanotube-reinforced composite shields.
