The purpose of this chapter is to review the historical writings about the development of information science or certain aspects of it rather than to review historic events and figures in the development of IS. The chapter is based on the author's perception of the principal interest of the memebership of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS) since its foundation in 1937 as the American Documentation Institute. In this view, IS is centered on the representaiton, storage, transmission, selection (retrieval, filtering) and the use of documents and messages,where documents and messages are created for use by humans. Interest extends outwards in many directions because of the need to understand contextual, institutional, methodological, technological, and theoretical aspects.

History of Information Science

This paper reviews the history of storage systems. The first section begins with the era of early mechanical calculators and the following four sections review historically major storage devices such as magnetic tapes, magnetic disks, optical devices, and solid-state devices. The final two sections focus on recent system technologies such as storage networking and cloud-based storage.

The History of Storage Systems

A dominant logic describes the manner is which a firm or society organizes much of its activity in order to be successful. Historical analysis indicates that the information systems developed during a period reflect the needs of the current dominant logic of that era. It is argued that the current customer service dominant logic is being replaced or complemented by a sustainability dominant logic, which reflects the growing concern with environmental issues. The implications for IS scholarship and education are discussed. In particular, there will likely be a greater emphasis on optimization and simulation techniques and more attention to managing large data sets in research and teaching. In addition, there is a need to revisit socio-technical frameworks that ignore the environment as a key factor in IS design and deployment decisions.

Risks inherent in the digital surveillance economy: A research agenda:

Economic development and growth are driven by the emergence of new technologies, new products and services, new institutions, new policies, and so on. Important though it is, the emergence of novelty is not well understood. Epistemological and methodological problems make it a difficult research topic. They imply a ‘bound of unknowledge’ (Shackle) for economic theorizing wherever novelty occurs in economic life. To make progress, this paper takes stock of the problems. The methodological consequences for causal explanations and the modelling of economics dynamics are discussed, and some possibilities for positively theorizing about novelty are outlined.

Novelty and the bounds of unknowledge in economics

A detailed and exemplified account is given on the invention and development of the Hollerith Punched Card from the beginning in 1886 until 1928. The change of use from counting to value statistics is shown. The size of the Hollerith Punched Card was standardized very early. The cards were soon used both for data capture and data punching - the dual purpose punched card. The first Hollerith cards were punched with a conductor's punch, soon be replaced by the Pantograph Punch, and, after the decimal columns have appeared, a Mechanical Key Punch, the Type 001, later replaced by the Electrical Key Punch Type 011, was used.
