Abstract: This chapter will shortly review the history of borrowing in New Persian as well as language planning in Iran, with a focus on terminology planning. It will explain one of its main challenges after the contact with the English language. We will see that previous language planning institutes were mainly involved in constructing Persian equivalents for full forms borrowed from different languages. However, recent language policy makers and planners have encountered the new challenge of English abbreviated forms. Finally, the main policy principles that apply to official terminology planning in Iran at the present time will be introduced.

Abstract: This chapter discusses the theoretical basis and outcomes of the official terminology plan by the Academy of Persian Language and Literature seeking encourage abbreviation in Persian in order to eliminate English abbreviated forms from Persian terminologies. It answers crucial questions including: are the outcomes of the official plan good terms? Is Persian encountering a borrowed term formation method? Does Principle of Least Effort support the terminology plan for abbreviation? Why is it difficult to counter English abbreviated forms? Why are abbreviated forms not coined vigorously in Persian? And, is the infrequency of abbreviation in Persian a problem? This chapter explains the reasons of the inequality between the dynamicity of abbreviation methods in different languages from structural, cognitive and sociolinguistic perspectives. It also suggests strategies to address unresolved issues that have arisen before approving the plan and during its implementation.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the quantity and quality of the Persian constructed abbreviated forms with their pre-existing English equivalents, in order to understand the implementation of the official plan to promote abbreviation in Persian.
Abstract: In order to understand the implementation of the official plan to promote abbreviation in Persian in response to the extensiveness of borrowed English abbreviated forms, I compared the quantity and quality of the Persian constructed abbreviated forms, that is, the outcomes of the plan, with their pre-existing English equivalents. The collections of approved terms produced by the Academy of Persian language and Literature contain the outcomes of the official plan and thus comprise the data source for this study. This chapter describes the data and typologies of English and Persian abbreviated forms and the methodology applied to conduct this research.

TL;DR: The increasing number of English abbreviated forms appearing in textbooks and academic discourse is one of the challenges facing language planners, terminologists, authors and translators of scientific texts in some countries, including Iran.
Abstract: The increasing number of English abbreviated forms appearing in textbooks and academic discourse is one of the challenges facing language planners, terminologists, authors and translators of scientific texts in some countries, including Iran. This Chapter defines the challenge of English abbreviated forms in Persian, and explains how the increasing number of borrowed English abbreviated forms in Persian persuaded Iranian terminology planners to encourage abbreviation, as a word/term formation method, through the framework of an official terminological plan. It will also review past evaluations of the plan and provide an update regarding the remaing gaps that will be bridged by the current study.

TL;DR: Transgender people are less active than cisgender people and cross-sex hormone treatment appears to be able to indirectly increase physical activity within this population, which may be beneficial for mental well-being.
Abstract: Background: Physical activity has been found to alleviate mental health problems and could be beneficial for at-risk populations, such as transgender people. This study had 3 aims. First, to explore the amount of physical activity that treatment-seeking transgender people engage in and to compare this to matched cisgender people. Second, to determine whether there was a difference in physical activity depending on cross-sex hormone use. Third, to determine factors that predict physical activity among treatment-seeking transgender people. Methods: Transgender (n = 360) and cisgender people (n = 314) were recruited from the United Kingdom. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires about physical activity, symptoms of anxiety and depression, self-esteem, body satisfaction, and transphobia.
