TL;DR: A method combining the use of discrete shearlet transform and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) is presented to classify surface defects of hot-rolled steel strips into the six classes of rolled-in scale, patches, crazing, pitted surface, inclusion and scratches.
Abstract: In this paper, a method combining the use of discrete shearlet transform (DST) and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) is presented to classify surface defects of hot-rolled steel strips into the six classes of rolled-in scale, patches, crazing, pitted surface, inclusion and scratches. Feature extraction involves the extraction of multi-directional shearlet features from each input image followed by GLCM calculations from all extracted sub-bands, from which a set of statistical features is extracted. The resultant high-dimensional feature vectors are then reduced using principal component analysis. A supervised support vector machine classifier is finally trained to classify the surface defects. The proposed feature set is compared against the Gabor, wavelets and the original GLCM in order to evaluate and validate its robustness. Experiments were conducted on a database of hot-rolled steel strips consisting of 1800 grayscale images whose defects exhibit high inter-class similarity as well as high intra-class appearance variations. Results indicate that the proposed DST–GLCM method is superior to other methods and achieves classification rates of 96.00%.

TL;DR: This paper surveys the literature often recent researches on echocardiography image segmentation methods, focusing on techniques developed for medical use, and presents a classification of methodology in terms of use of prior information.
Abstract: Segmentation is an important step in medical imaging to acquire qualitative measurements such as the location of the desired objects and also for quantitative measurements such as area, volume or the analysis of dynamic behaviour of anatomical structures over time Among these images, ultrasound images play a crucial role, because they can be produced on video-rate and therefore allows a dynamic analysis of moving structures In addition, the acquisition of these images is non-invasive, cheap, and does not require ionizing radiations compared to other medical imaging techniques On the other hand, the automatic segmentation of anatomical structures in ultrasound imagery is a real challenge due to acoustic interferences (speckle noise) and artifacts which are inherent in these images This paper surveys the literature often recent researches on echocardiography image segmentation methods, focusing on techniques developed for medical First, we present a review of articles by clinical application to highlight the approaches that have been investigated and degree of validation that has been done in different clinical domains Then, we present a classification of methodology in terms of use of prior information We conclude by selecting ten recent papers which have presented original ideas that have demonstrated particular clinical usefulness or potential specific to the echocardiography segmentation problem The contribution of the paper is in three ways: 1) to serve as a tutorial on the field for both clinicians and technologists, 2) to provide an extensive account of segmentation techniques in a comprehensive and systematic manner, and 3) to critically review recent approaches in terms of their performance and degree of clinical evaluation with respect to the final goal of cardiac functional analysis

TL;DR: An extended version of LBP which is called BackGround LBP (BGLBP) is presented and it is designed for the background extraction application but it is extendable to the other areas as a texture descriptor.
Abstract: Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is invariant to the monotonic changes in the grey scale domain. This property enables LBP to present a texture descriptor being useful in applications dealing with the local illumination changes. However, the existing versions of LBP are not able to handle image illumination changes, especially in outdoor environments. The non-patterned illumination changes disturb performance of the background extraction methods. In this paper, an extended version of LBP which is called BackGround LBP (BGLBP) is presented. BGLBP is designed for the background extraction application but it is extendable to the other areas as a texture descriptor. BGLBP is an extension of D-LBP, Centre-Symmetric LBP, ULBP, and R-LBP and it has been designed to inherit the positive properties of previous versions. The performance of BGLBP as a part of background extraction method is investigated. In addition, a comparison between BGLBP as a general texture descriptor and a number of LBP versions is conducted.

TL;DR: In this article a shadow detection method using both color and edge information is presented and a new formula is used in the denominator of original c1 c2 c3 in addition using the hue difference of foreground and background is proposed.
Abstract: Shadows appear in many scenes. Human can easily distinguish shadows from objects, but it is one of the challenges for shadow detection intelligent automated systems. Accurate shadow detection can be difficult due to the illumination variations of the background and similarity between appearance of the objects and the background. Color and edge information are two popular features that have been used to distinguish cast shadows from objects. However, this become a problem when the difference of color information between object, shadow and background is poor, the edge of the shadow area is not clear and the shadow detection method is supposed to use only color or edge information method. In this article a shadow detection method using both color and edge information is presented. In order to improve the accuracy of shadow detection using color information, a new formula is used in the denominator of original c1 c2 c3. In addition using the hue difference of foreground and background is proposed. Furthermore, edge information is applied separately and the results are combined using a Boolean operator.

TL;DR: An automatic facial expression recognition system that detects and extracts the informative and discriminant regions of the face using Haar-feature based cascade classifiers and these region-based features are stored into separate image files as a preprocessing step.
Abstract: In Facial Expression Recognition Systems (FERS), only particular regions of the face are utilized for discrimination. The areas of the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth are the most important features in any FERS. Applying facial features descriptors such as the local binary pattern (LBP) on such areas results in an effective and efficient FERS. In this paper, we propose an automatic facial expression recognition system. Unlike other systems, it detects and extracts the informative and discriminant regions of the face (i.e., eyes, nose, and mouth areas) using Haar-feature based cascade classifiers and these region-based features are stored into separate image files as a preprocessing step. Then, LBP is applied to these image files for facial texture representation and a feature-vector per subject is obtained by concatenating the resulting LBP histograms of the decomposed region-based features. The one-vs.-rest SVM, which is a popular multi-classification method, is employed with the Radial Basis Function (RBF) for facial expression classification. Experimental results show that this approach yields good performance for both frontal and near-frontal facial images in terms of accuracy and time complexity. Cohn-Kanade and JAFFE, which are benchmark facial expression datasets, are used to evaluate this approach.
