TL;DR: In this article, a Portuguese version of the psychotherapy process Q-set was developed, which can be used in different contexts to quantitatively describe the therapeutic process of different psychotherapies in clinically significant terms.
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: In Brazil, psychotherapy research is in its early development; there are no systematic studies of the therapeutic process, and there are few available measurement instruments for researchers interested in this field. OBJECTIVE: To develop a Portuguese version of the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set. METHOD: The development of a Portuguese version of the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set involved four stages: translation, back translation, evaluation of semantic equivalence and discussion of the results by the authors. Five raters were trained to apply the instrument. During the training, a field diary was used to record difficulties identified in task execution and to subsidize complementary data. Thereafter, the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set was applied to seven sessions of a short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy to examine agreement between referees. RESULTS: The Portuguese version of the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set presented good semantic equivalence with the original. The assessment of interrater reliability had a satisfactory result. It is worth stressing that applying the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set requires study, time and reflection. The discussion with raters pointed to the need of reviewing the application manual concerning the clinical examples. This will be performed in the near future to minimize the discrepancies observed in the understanding of some concepts and to better adjust them to the Brazilian reality. CONCLUSION: This study provides a Portuguese version of the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set, a versatile instrument that can be used in different contexts to quantitatively describe the therapeutic process of different psychotherapies in clinically significant terms.

TL;DR: Bivariate time-series analyses showed that prototype components capturing the client's adherence to idealCBT behaviors and collaboration between therapist and client on ideal PDT and CBT behaviors predicted therapy progress.
Abstract: A brief psychodynamic psychotherapy was assessed using the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Psychotherapy Process Q-Set (PQS). Each session was scored for its adherence to expert psychodynamic therapy (PDT) and cognitive–behavioral therapy (CBT) prototypes derived from the PQS. Results revealed that the therapy process adhered more closely to prototypical CBT than prototypical PDT. Bivariate time-series analyses showed that prototype components capturing the client's adherence to ideal CBT behaviors and collaboration between therapist and client on ideal PDT and CBT behaviors predicted therapy progress. In addition, specific client symptoms influenced whether the therapist adhered to prototypical PDT or CBT behaviors.

TL;DR: The study revealed that the clinical and socio-demographic profile of clientele seen in this service is consistent with other training clinics in Rio Grande do Sul and in other states of Brazil.
Abstract: This study aims to delineate the clinical and socio-demographic profile of the clients assisted by a school-clinic of Psychology of a private university in southern Brazil. We assessed the clinical records of 604 patients under individual psychological interventions between 2003 and 2007. The results showed that: a) the majority of patients were women, but among children the majority were of masculine gender; b) the main complaints were of depressive symptoms, but variations were also verified in accordance with age and gender; c) most of the patients had sought psychological care spontaneously; d) dropouts levels were similar to those of other studies in this context; e) no significant associations were found among dropout and age, gender and waiting time. The study revealed that the clinical and socio-demographic profile of clientele seen in this service is consistent with other training clinics in Rio Grande do Sul and in other states of Brazil. The results indicate the overall effectiveness of the service and of the adopted model of brief psychotherapy. Inconsistencies in patient’s records have been responsible for the methodological limitations of the study. The research enabled the adoption of several procedures to improve the quality of records and to support further studies.

TL;DR: Adolescents who have been reared in lesbian-mother families since birth demonstrate healthy psychological adjustment, and these findings have implications for the clinical care of adolescents and for pediatricians who are consulted on matters that pertain to same-sex parenting.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to document the psychological adjustment of adolescents who were conceived through donor insemination by lesbian mothers who enrolled before these offspring were born in the largest, longest running, prospective, longitudinal study of same-sex–parented families. Adolescents who have been reared in lesbian-mother families since birth demonstrate healthy psychological adjustment. These findings have implications for the clinical care of adolescents and for pediatricians who are consulted on matters that pertain to same-sex parenting.

TL;DR: The CORE-OM was successfully adapted to Brazilian Portuguese, and its semantic and conceptual properties were equivalent to those of the original instrument.
Abstract: Introduction: The Clinical Outcome in Routine Evaluation – Outcome Measurement (CORE-OM) was developed in the 1990s, with the aim of assessing the efficacy and effectiveness of mental health treatments. Objective: To adapt the CORE-OM for use in the Brazilian population. Method: The instrument was translated and adapted based on the international protocol developed by the CORE System Trust which contains seven steps: translation, semantic equivalence analysis, synthesis of the translated versions, pre-testing in the target population, data analysis and back translation. Results: After semantic analysis, modifications were necessary in seven of the 34 original items. Changes were made to avoid repetition of words and the use of terms difficult to understand. Internal consistency analysis showed evidence of score stability in the CORE-OM adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. Conclusion: The instrument was successfully adapted to Brazilian Portuguese, and its semantic and conceptual properties were equivalent to those of the original instrument.

TL;DR: The author studies, from the point of view of the psychic economy, the manner in which this specific form of psychic functioning is maintained: in other words, the vicissitudes of unavailable affect.
Abstract: The author attempts to conceptualize a phenomenon that frequently passes unnoticed for a considerable period of time in the course of an analysis. An apparently "normal" psychoanalytic discourse may reveal that the analysand who produces it is using words and ideas that are largely, perhaps totally, devoid of affect for him; instead, the analyst tends to become "affected." This may appear in a wide variety of clinical categories: "narcissistic personality disorders," "psychosomatic personalities," "as-if characters," etc. The author does not seek to add to the clinical categories but to study, from the point of view of the psychic economy, the manner in which this specific form of psychic functioning is maintained: in other words, the vicissitudes of unavailable affect.

TL;DR: This paper assessed the psychological distress, life satisfaction, and perceived stress of Ecuadorian teachers who adopted online learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the most used coping strategies included seeking social support, exercising, and engaging in leisure activities.
Abstract: Purpose This study assessed the psychological distress, life satisfaction, and perceived stress of Ecuadorian teachers who adopted online learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also aimed to qualitatively report the coping strategies used to maintain their mental health and well-being. Methods A web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted from June to mid-August 2020. Results In total, 394 teachers completed the questionnaire, and from those, 320 also completed an optional open-ended question included in the survey. More than half of the participants reported taking care of children under 11 years and/or adults over 65 years. At the time of the study, most of the participants were teaching in higher education settings. Age was significantly correlated with all the psychological variables, females presented higher levels of perceived stress, and teachers with home care responsibilities presented higher psychological distress as well as perceived stress. Teachers who had previous training and experience with online teaching presented lower levels of distress, perceived stress as well as higher levels of life satisfaction. The most used coping strategies included seeking social support, exercising, and engaging in leisure activities. Conclusion The results provide useful information to help develop initiatives that promote teacher well-being. Future studies should consider using a more diverse sample and dedicate attention to work-family conflicts as well as social and structural inequalities that may have a toll on teachers' mental health and performance.
