Conflict in nursing profession is natural and inevitable and arises as a daily challenge in healthcare organizations. Therefore, conflict management is extremely important for organizational effectiveness and efficiency and nursing staff must effectively manage conflict in order to provide an environment that stimulates personal growth and ensures quality of patient care. Aim: The present study aimed to assess the effect of conflict management educational program for staff nurses on quality of patient care. Research Design: Quasi experimental design was utilized. Study Setting: The study was conducted in general Medical units at Benha University Hospital. The study sample was: All available staff nurses (116) and a convenient sample of (200) patients from the above mentioned study setting. Tools of data collection: Three tools were used: (1) conflict management knowledge questionnaire, (2) Rahim Organization Conflict Inventory II (ROCI II), subordinate form (B) and (3) quality of patients' care questionnaire. The result: The findings of this study showed that there was highly statistically significant improvement in staff nurses' knowledge regarding conflict thorough program. In addition, there was highly statistically significant improvement in conflict management strategies and level of quality of patient care thorough program. Conclusion: The study concluded that there was a positive highly statistical significant correlation between overall score of conflict management and quality of patient care thorough program. Recommendation: Hospital should carry out continuous in–service training program about policies and guidelines that facilitate collaborative practice and use a proactive measure to address conflict issues and moving toward resolution of it. And nursing faculties should to support nursing staff with required knowledge and skills that contribute to quality patient care.

Evaluation of Self-Directed Learning in Nursing Students: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy is a widely used procedure in medicine today. It is the diagnosis and treatment of choice among elderly patients with upper gastrointestinal disorders. Thus anxiety, stress, and depression of adverse out-come or side effect and discomfort regarding endoscopy reduce the patient’s acceptance ability. Effective procedure ex-planation and safety measures have positively impact on decrease level of anxiety, stress, and depression and improve elderly patient’s general health condition Aim: Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions on level of anxiety, stress and depression of elderly patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Design: A quasi experimental study design with pre and post procedure was used. Setting: The study was conducted at Gastrointestinal Surgery Center (GISC) (Endoscopy Unit) Mansoura University Subjects: A convenient sample of 76 elderly patients undergoing GIT endoscopy. Data collected over a period of 9 months from first of May 2019 at the end of January 2020. Tools: Three tools were used: Socio Demographic Characteristics and Clinical Data Structured Interview Schedule, Depression, Anxiety and Stress scales (DASS-21), and Endoscopic Nursing interventions. Results: The study results revealed that statistically significant improvement in all aspects of elderly patient's anxiety score at pre and post nursing intervention (p<0.001). There were significant improvements of level of stress from pre and post implementation of nursing intervention to endoscopy (p<0.05). Also, there was a statistically significant difference in the pre, and posttest mean score of depression (p<0.05). Statistically significant differences regarding all sociodemographic characteristics within the studied subjects and their total mean score of anxiety, stress, and depression. Conclusion A clear and noticeable improvement in the mean score of anxiety, stress and depression of all studied subject after the implementation of the endoscopic nursing interventions than before. Recommendation: Replication of this study is highly recommended on a large representative probability sample to achieve generalizable results.

Effectiveness of nursing interventions on level of anxiety, stress, and depression of elderly patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy

Aim : Compliance with standard precautions (SPs) is a critical workplace safety issue for nurse interns (NIs) as they are clinically incompetent, and obligated to cover nursing shortage in intensive care units (ICUs). Thus current study aimed to assess factors affecting NIs’ compliance with SPs. Methods : Descriptive study design was used. The sample included 110 NIs trained in ICUs at University Hospitals. Tools: Tool (I) Factors affecting NIs’ compliance with SPs included items on compliance with SPs, environmental risk factors, stick injuries, and vaccination, influence of role-modeling and refreshment program on compliance with SPs. Tool (II) Knowledge test covered SPs and transmission of blood-borne pathogens. Results : About 40% of NIs noncompliance with SPs due to lack in supplies and equipments, Majority of them had low and moderate knowledge level regarding SPs. 71.8% had 4-6 times needle stick injuries and 88.2% didn’t report it. 39.1% never use protective equipment in emergency and 29.1% always recap contaminated needles. Conclusions : NIs are at risk of stick injury as they lacking knowledge and skills regarding SPs. Moreover, lacking of supplies and training programs regarding SPs, and absence of reporting system of these incidents contribute to NIs noncompliance with SPs thus they are more at risk of blood transmitted diseases.

Factors affecting nurse interns’ compliance with standard precautions for preventing stick injury

Orientation programs based on LNA encourage nurse interns to feel safe and enable them to demonstrate competency in the basic clinical and management skills needed for providing high quality and safe patient care. Using LNA ensure NIs commitment to these program. This study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate an orientation program about clinical and management skills needed for nurse interns based on the findings of learning needs assessment tool. Material and method the study was conducted at Tanta University Faculty of Nursing and Tanta University Emergency and Main Hospitals ICUs and obstetric and dialysis departments. (384) nursing students passed the 4th academic year attended the orientation program. (198) spent their internship year at Tanta University Hospitals were included in the researcher’s observation 3 month post program. The data collection was achieved by using LNA scale, knowledge test, NIs’ orientation program and follow up observation sheet. RESULTS: Pre program around half (51%) of NIs assessed themselves as cannot carryout different clinical and management skills. Majority (87%) of NIs got low knowledge level for both skills. Post orientation program statistical significant improvement at (P≤0.05) was found in NIs’ knowledge and practical levels for both clinical and management skills. Conclusion designing orientation programs before starting the internship year based on nurse interns LNA is important to ensure efficient interns performance. Recommendation conduct orientation programs based on nurse interns’ LNA and knowledge test before starting internship year and at the beginning of each new rotation, provide nurse interns with pass booklet include standard procedures required to be carried out in each rotation, provide them also with designed evaluation manual based on the pass booklet and implementing nursing mentor-ship and preceptor-ship programs during internship year.

Application of Designed Orientation Program for Nurse Interns Based on Learning Needs Assessment

Management program on nursing staff leading role and compliance to follow safety measures is an important component help to protect nursing staff from work related risks. Goal of safety program is to keep staff nurses safe and lead them toward safety actions, so they can help them to gain knowledge, and skills to deliver safe and quality care. So, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of management program on nursing staff leading role and compliance to follow safety measures at intensive care units. Study was conducted at all ICUs of Tanta Emergency Hospital. The total number of study sample was (n=100) nursing staff working in ICUs at Tanta Emergency Hospital, including charge nurses (n=30) and bedside nurses (n=70). Twoo tools were used for the collection of data: (1) Nursing Staff Performance Scale and (2) Nursing Staff Knowledge Questionnaire. The results of this study revealed that minority (26.7%) of charge nurses showed satisfactory level of practice for leading role pre-program, improved to be majority (86.7%) post-program. Few (41.4%) bedside nurses had satisfactory level of total compliance to follow safety measures practice pre-program, improved to majority (88.6%) post-program. Nursing staff (48%) had poor level of total knowledge pre-program, but the majority (92%) showed good level of total knowledge post program. Conclusion: Nursing staff knowledge and practice on leading role and compliance to follow safety measures in ICUs at Tanta Emergency Hospital were low, change nurses leading role and bedside nurse's compliance practice improved after implementation of needed program. Therefore, the study recommended that conduct regular training programs, workshops and seminars for nursing staff to refresh their knowledge, skills and experiences related to leading role and safety measures.

Effect of Management Program on Nursing Staff Leading Role and Compliance to Follow Safety Measures at Intensive Care Units

Background: Clinical leadership plays a significant role for emphasizing the responsibility of charge nurses and contribute to developing and empowering their leadership capacity. Competent charge nurse need to be aware of the enablers, opportunities, strategic points and cultures of work environment they were operating. Objective: to study Efficacy of application of clinical leadership competencies program on charge nurses based on self-need assessment. Setting: Tanta Main University Hospital ICUs. Subjects: All (78) charge nurses working at studied ICUs. Tools: Three tools were used, Tool I: Self-assessment of charge nurse development need for clinical leadership skills and capabilities. Tool II: Knowledge assessment on clinical leadership competencies. Tool III: Clinical leadership competency level assessment. Results: Charge nurses 87.2% had high level of needs and importance regarding clinical leadership skills and capabilities development. Preprogram charge nurses 98.7%, 94.9% respectively showed poor level of knowledge and competency of clinical leadership, changed significantly at p < 0.001 post program to be 94.9%, 96.2% respectively. Conclusion: Charge nurses at Main University Hospital ICUs knowledge and competency of clinical leadership were at low level, they were lacking knowledge for developing clinical leadership and have great need for program about clinical leadership competencies to improve their leadership role. Immediately after application of successful clinical leadership competency program, they significantly improved their leadership knowledge and competency. Recommendation: Charge nurses should contribute to clinical leadership development by attendance of formal education programmes, case-conferences, workshops, distance learning, e-learning and self-directed learning.

Efficacy of Application of Clinical Leadership Competencies Program on Charge Nurses Based on Self Need Assessment

Back ground: Management program about infection control is important to help head nurses gain knowledge to perform their roles, and for nurses to comply with standard infection control measures . Objective: Evaluate efficacy of implementing management program about infection control practices for nursing staff. Setting: All departments in Tanta University Emergency Hospital. Subjects: All head nurses (N= 31) and nurses (N =175) working in all departments of emergency hospital. Tools: (1) Infection Control Knowledge Questionnaire sheet, (2) Head Nurses' Performance Role on Infection Control Assessment Scale and, (3) Observational checklist, related to Infection Control practices. Results: Head nurses 58.1% and nurses 80.0% had poor level of total knowledge about infection control pre- program , while majority (90.3%- 86%) were at high level post program. Head nurses 61.3% had poor level of total specific knowledge pre-program, changed to be 90.3% and 87.1% had good level of knowledge post program . Pre-program majority (90.3%) of head nurses had mild level of performance of educational , consultation, research and support team in surveillance roles decreased to (3.2%) post program. Nurses range (15.4% - 22.9%) showed compliance level to infection control practices pre-program, improved to range (75.4% - 84.0%) post program with highly statistically significant differences (p= < 0.001). Conclusion: At Tanta University Emergency Hospital nursing staff basic knowledge, head nurses specific knowledge and role performance and nurses' compliance were low and statistically improved after implementation of needed management program. Recommendation: conduct regular training programs for nursing staff and encourage culture of compliance to infection control practices.

Efficacy of Implementation Management program about Infection Control practices for Nursing Staff

Background: Negotiation skills are qualities that allow two or more parties to reach a compromise. It includes abilities such as communication, persuasion, planning, and cooperating.  Head nurse who understand the basic principles and skills of negotiation will be ready to deal successfully with conflicting situations and become strong negotiators. Aim: Determine effect of educational program on head nurses’ negotiation skills for resolution of conflict among nurses in intensive care units. Method: Include all ICUs of Tanta University Main Hospitals and Emergency Hospital. Subjects: All (N=35) head nurses and nurses (N=300). Tools: Tool I: Head nurses knowledge about negotiation skills for resolution of conflict among nurses’ questionnaire. Tool II:Existence of conflict among ICU nurses’ questionnaire. Tool III:Head nurses self-assessment about practice of negotiation for resolution of conflict among nurses. Results: High percent (76.3%) of ICU nurses existed high level and 13.7% and 10.0% had moderate and low levels of conflict respectively. Pre- program head nurses 74.3% showed poor level of total knowledge about negotiation skills, changed to 82.9% of them showed good level of knowledge post program. Head nurses 25.7% showed satisfactory level preprogram significantly changed to 88.6% at satisfactory level of total practice of negotiation skills for resolution of conflict among ICU nurses post program. Conclusion: Head nurses knowledge and practice about negotiation skills for resolution of conflict among ICU nurses were at low level at Tanta University Main Hospital and Emergency Hospital. Head nurses knowledge and practice improved significantly after attendance of program sessions. Recommendation: Conduct periodical training programs, workshops and seminars for head nurses to refresh their knowledge, and practice of negotiation skills for resolution of ICU nurses conflict.
