Abstract: A new magneto-optical sum rule is derived for circular magnetic dichroism in the x-ray region (CMXD). The integral of the CMXD signal over a given edge allows one to determine the ground-state expectation value of the orbital angular momentum. Applications are discussed to transition-metal and rare-earth magnetic systems.

Abstract: High precision, $L$${}_{2,3}$-edge photoabsorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of iron and cobalt were measured in transmission with in situ grown thin films, eliminating experimental artifacts encountered by the indirect methods used in all previous measurements. The magnetic moments determined from the integrals of these spectra are found to be in excellent agreement (within 3%) for the orbital to spin moment ratios, and in good agreement (within 7%) for the individual moments, with those obtained from Einstein--de Haas gyromagnetic ratio measurements, demonstrating decisively the applicability of the individual orbital and spin sum rules.

Abstract: Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) has been observed at the ${\mathit{L}}_{2,3}$ absorption edges of ferromagnetic nickel by use of circularly-polarized soft-x-ray synchrotron radiation. The MCD intensity ratio between the ${\mathit{L}}_{2}$ and ${\mathit{L}}_{3}$ edges is found to differ appreciably from that predicted by a simple exchange-split-valence-band model. Fine MCD features, imperceptible in the absorption spectra, are also observed, and a tentative interpretation is given. This work, demonstrating the feasibility of MCD measurements in the soft-x-ray region, provides a new approach to study 3d and 4f ferromagnetic systems with their respective dipole-permitted 2p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3d and 3d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}4f transitions.

Abstract: K shell excitation spectra of the aromatic molecules benzene and pyridine in the gas phase are compared to those for the solids (ices) and for monolayers chemisorbed on Pt(111). The gas phase and solid spectra are essentially identical and even the spectra for the chemisorbed molecules exhibit the same resonances. Because of the orientation of the molecules upon chemisorption the latter spectra show a strong polarization dependence as a function of x‐ray incidence. This polarization dependence in conjunction with a multiple scattering Xα calculation for the benzene molecule allows us to assign the origin of all K shell resonances. The resonances are found to arise from transitions to π* antibonding orbitals and to σ* shape resonances in the continuum. The shape resonances are characterized by potential barriers in high (l=5 and 6) angular momentum states of the excited photoelectron. The polarization dependence and energy position of the resonances allow the molecular orientation on the surface to be determined and show that the change in the carbon–carbon bond length is less than 0.02 A.

Abstract: Diamond-like carbon (DLC) is a metastable form of amorphous carbon with significant sp3 bonding. DLC is a semiconductor with a high mechanical hardness, chemical inertness, and optical transparency. This review will describe the deposition methods, deposition mechanisms, characterisation methods, electronic structure, gap states, defects, doping, luminescence, field emission, mechanical properties and some applications of DLCs. The films have widespread applications as protective coatings in areas, such as magnetic storage disks, optical windows and micro-electromechanical devices (MEMs).

Abstract: The field of viscous liquid and glassy solid dynamics is reviewed by a process of posing the key questions that need to be answered, and then providing the best answers available to the authors and their advisors at this time. The subject is divided into four parts, three of them dealing with behavior in different domains of temperature with respect to the glass transition temperature, Tg , and a fourth dealing with ‘‘short time processes.’’ The first part tackles the high temperature regime T.Tg ,i n which the system is ergodic and the evolution of the viscous liquid toward the condition at Tg is in focus. The second part deals with the regime T;Tg , where the system is nonergodic except for very long annealing times, hence has time-dependent properties ~aging and annealing!. The third part discusses behavior when the system is completely frozen with respect to the primary relaxation process but in which secondary processes, particularly those responsible for ‘‘superionic’’ conductivity, and dopart mobility in amorphous silicon, remain active. In the fourth part we focus on the behavior of the system at the crossover between the low frequency vibrational components of the molecular motion and its high frequency relaxational components, paying particular attention to very recent developments in the short time dielectric response and the high Q mechanical response. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.@S0021-8979~00!02213-1#
