Recovery of large carnivores in Europe’s modern human-dominated landscapes
Guillaume Chapron,Petra Kaczensky,John D. C. Linnell,Manuela von Arx,Djuro Huber,Henrik Andrén,José Vicente López-Bao,José Vicente López-Bao,Michal Adamec,Francisco Álvares,Ole Anders,Linas Balčiauskas,Vaidas Balys,Péter Bedő,Ferdinand Bego,Juan Carlos Blanco,Urs Breitenmoser,Urs Breitenmoser,Henrik Brøseth,Luděk Bufka,Raimonda Bunikyte,Paolo Ciucci,Alexander Dutsov,Thomas Engleder,Christian Fuxjäger,Claudio Groff,Katja Holmala,Bledi Hoxha,Yorgos Iliopoulos,Ovidiu Ionescu,Ovidiu Ionescu,Jasna Jeremić,Klemen Jerina,Gesa Kluth,Felix Knauer,Ilpo Kojola,Ivan Kos,Miha Krofel,Jakub Kubala,Saša Kunovac,Josip Kusak,Miroslav Kutal,Miroslav Kutal,Olof Liberg,Aleksandra Majić,Peep Männil,Ralph Manz,Eric Marboutin,Francesca Marucco,Dime Melovski,Kujtim Mersini,Yorgos Mertzanis,Robert W. TL;DR: It is shown that roughly one-third of mainland Europe hosts at least one large carnivore species, with stable or increasing abundance in most cases in 21st-century records, and coexistence alongside humans has become possible, argue the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unravelling biodiversity, evolution and threats to conservation in the Sahara‐Sahel
José Carlos Brito,Raquel Godinho,Fernando Martínez-Freiría,Juan M. Pleguezuelos,Hugo Rebelo,Hugo Rebelo,Xavier Santos,Cândida Gomes Vale,Guillermo Velo-Antón,Zbyszek Boratyński,Zbyszek Boratyński,Sílvia B. Carvalho,Sonia Maria Soares Ferreira,Duarte V. Gonçalves,Teresa Luísa Silva,Pedro Tarroso,João Carlos Campos,João V. Leite,Joana Garrido Nogueira,Francisco Álvares,Neftalí Sillero,Andack Saad Sow,Soumia Fahd,Pierre-André Crochet,Salvador Carranza +24 more
TL;DR: Although there are still numerous knowledge gaps for the optimised conservation of biodiversity in the region, a set of research priorities is provided to identify the framework data needed to support regional conservation planning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome-wide Evidence Reveals that African and Eurasian Golden Jackals Are Distinct Species
Klaus-Peter Koepfli,Klaus-Peter Koepfli,John P. Pollinger,Raquel Godinho,Raquel Godinho,Jacqueline Robinson,Amanda J. Lea,Sarah A. Hendricks,Rena M. Schweizer,Olaf Thalmann,Olaf Thalmann,Pedro Silva,Zhenxin Fan,Andrey A. Yurchenko,Pavel Dobrynin,Alexey I. Makunin,James A. Wayne +27 more
TL;DR: Using morphologic data, a striking morphologic similarity between East African and Eurasian golden jackals is demonstrated, suggesting parallelism, which may have misled taxonomists and likely reflects uniquely intense interspecific competition in the East African carnivore guild.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toothless wildlife protection laws
José Vicente López-Bao,José Vicente López-Bao,Juan Carlos Blanco,Alejandro Rodríguez,Raquel Godinho,Víctor Sazatornil,Francisco Álvares,Emilio J. García,Luis Llaneza,Miguel Rico,Yolanda Cortés,Vicente Palacios,Guillaume Chapron +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that legal obligations to conserve endangered species may be useless if the rule of law is not properly enforced, and that such situation is not exclusive to countries with political instability or weak institutional capacities but can also be relevant to member states of the European Union and therefore bound to European legislation on nature conservation.
Journal ArticleDOI
A New Method for Noninvasive Genetic Sampling of Saliva in Ecological Research.
TL;DR: A noninvasive method of collection that combines baits and porous materials able to capture saliva that could advantageously allow detection of socially low-ranked individuals underrepresented in sources of DNA that are involved in marking behaviour (faeces or urine).
