This paper presents Virtual Ring Routing (VRR), a new network routing protocol that occupies a unique point in the design space. VRR is inspired by overlay routing algorithms in Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) but it does not rely on an underlying network routing protocol. It is implemented directly on top of the link layer. VRR provides both raditional point-to-point network routing and DHT routing to the node responsible for a hash table key.VRR can be used with any link layer technology but this paper describes a design and several implementations of VRR that are tuned for wireless networks. We evaluate the performance of VRR using simulations and measurements from a sensor network and an 802.11a testbed. The experimental results show that VRR provides robust performance across a wide range of environments and workloads. It performs comparably to, or better than, the best wireless routing protocol in each experiment. VRR performs well because of its unique features: it does not require network flooding or trans-lation between fixed identifiers and location-dependent addresses.

Virtual ring routing: network routing inspired by DHTs

With increasingly diverse QOS requirements, it is impractical to continue to rely on conventional routing paradigms that emphasize the search for an optimal path based on a predetermined metric, or a particular function of multiple metrics. Modern routing strategies must not only be adaptive to network changes but also offer considerable economy of scope. We consider the problem of routing in networks subject to QOS constraints. After providing an overview of prior routing work, we define various QOS constraints. We present a call architecture that may be used for QOS matching and a connection management mechanism for network resource allocation. We discuss fallback routing, and review some existing routing frameworks. We also present a new rule-based, call-by-call source routing strategy for integrated communication networks. >

Routing subject to quality of service constraints in integrated communication networks

Most of the QoS routing schemes proposed so far require periodic exchange of QoS state information among routers, imposing both communication overhead on the network and processing overhead on core routers. Furthermore, stale QoS state information causes the performance of these QoS routing schemes to degrade drastically. In order to circumvent these problems, we focus on localized QoS routing schemes where the edge routers make routing decisions using only "local" information and thus reducing the overhead at core routers. We first describe virtual capacity-based routing (VCR), a theoretical scheme based on the notion of virtual capacity of a route. We then propose proportional sticky routing (PSR), an easily realizable approximation of VCR and analyze its performance. We demonstrate through extensive simulations that adaptive proportional routing is indeed a viable alternative to the global QoS routing approach.

A fallback strategy for a system (700) and method (200) is provided for rerouting a call that fails to be established utilizing a first set of constraints in a communication network system. This strategy enables the communication network system to utilize a look-around-first type of preemption that avoids unnecessary preemption and provides alternate routing for a call according to predetermined constraints selected by a user.

System and method for call-by-call source routing with rule-based fallbacks

Schemes that do not explicitly use much information about the state of networks are briefly surveyed, with the focus on dynamic alternative routing (DAR), a simple but highly effective routing method currently planned for the British Telecom Network. State-dependent routing and how some of the methodology also has bearing on the control issue are discussed. The problem of dimensioning a network that uses dynamic routing (i.e. how much capacity is needed and where it should be put to provide an acceptable performance) is addressed.
