Revisiting the problem of a crack impinging on an interface: A modeling framework for the interaction between the phase field approach for brittle fracture and the interface cohesive zone model

This review article has two parts, published in separate issues of this journal, which consider the stress singularities that occur in linear elastostatics. In the present Part I, after a brief review of the singularities that attend concentrated loads, attention is focused on the singularities that occur away from such loading, and primarily on 2D configurations. A number of examples of these singularities are given in the Introduction. For all of these examples, it is absolutely essential that the presence of singularities at least be recognized if the stress fields are to be used in attempts to ensure structural integrity. Given an appreciation of a stress singularity’s occurrence, there are two options open to the stress analyst if the stress analysis is to actually be used. First, to try and improve the modeling so that the singularity is removed and physically sensible stresses result. Second, to try and interpret singularities that persist in a physically meaningful way. Section 2 of the paper reviews avenues available for the removal of stress singularities. At this time, further research is needed to effect the removal of all singularities. Section 3 of the paper reviews possible interpretations of singularities. At this time, interpretations using the singularity coefficient, or stress intensity factor, would appear to be the best available. To implement an approach using stress intensity factors in a general context, two types of companion analysis are usually required: analytical asymptotics to characterize local singular fields; and numerical analysis to capture participation in global configurations. Section 4 of the paper reviews both types of analysis. At this time, methods for both are fairly well developed. Studies in the literature which actually effect asymptotic analyses of specific singular configurations will be considered in Part II of this review article. Stress singularities in classical elasticity–I: Removal, interpretation, and analysis

This review article~Part II! is a sequel to an earlier one ~Part I! that dealt with means of removal and interpretation of stress singularities in elasticity, as well as their asymptotic and numerical analysis. It reviews contributions to the literature that have actually effected asymptotic identifications of possible stress singularities for specific configurations. For the most part, attention is focused on 2D elastostatic configurations with constituent materials being homogeneous and isotropic. For such configurations, the following types of stress singularity are identified: power singularities with both real and complex exponents, logarithmic intensification of power singularities with real exponents, pure logarithmic singularities, and log-squared singularities. These identifications are reviewed for the in-plane loading of angular elastic plates comprised of a single material in Section 2, and for such plates comprised of multiple materials in Section 3. In Section 4, singularity identifications are examined for the out-of-plane shear of elastic wedges comprised of single and multiple materials, and for the out-of-plane bending of elastic plates within the context of classical and higher-order theory. A review of stress singularities identified for other geometries is given in Section 5, axisymmetric and 3D configurations being considered. A limited examination of the stress singularities identified for other field equations is given as well in Section 5. Stress singularities in classical elasticity—II: Asymptotic identification

This paper studies the importance of the cohesive zone in the modelling of a fluid driven fracture under plain strain conditions. The fracture is driven by pumping of an incompressible viscous fluid at the fracture inlet. Rock deformation is modeled for linear elastic and poroelastic solids. Fluid flow in the fracture is modeled by lubrication theory. The cohesive zone approach is used as the fracture propagation criterion. Finite element analysis was used to compute the solution for the crack length, the fracture opening and propagation pressure as a function of the time and distance from the wellbore. It is demonstrated that the crack profiles and the propagation pressures are larger in the case of elastic-softening cohesive model compared to the results of the rigid-softening cohesive model for both elastic and poroelastic cohesive solids. It is found that the results are affected by the slope of the loading branch of the cohesive model and they are nearly unaffected from the exact form of the softening branch. Furthermore, the size of the process zone, the fracture geometry and the propagation pressure increase with increasing confining stresses. These results may explain partially the discrepancies in net-pressures between field measurements and conventional model predictions.

Finite element analysis of stress singularity in partial slip and gross sliding regimes in fretting wear

For direct imprinting of metals, hard materials such as diamond and SiC have been used to construct mold inserts in preference to Si, despite the ease in fabricating Si-based micro-/nano- scale structures. In this communication, we demonstrate that micron scale Al structures can be replicated with good fidelity at room temperature by compression molding with Si inserts without incurring insert damage. We further report on results of a finite element analysis of the mechanics of the molding process. The finite element results provide some understanding of the observed lack of damage to the Si inserts.

The nature of the stress field occurring at the vertex of an angular elastic plate under in-plane loading is reconsidered. An additional boundary condition is introduced. This boundary condition reflects the action of cohesive stress-separation laws. Companion asymptotic analysis proceeds routinely on employing coupled eigenfunction expansions. Results show that a number of configurations that had previously contained stress singularities become singularity free.

Design for structural integrity requires an appreciation of where stress singularities can occur in structural configurations. While there is a rich literature devoted to the identification of such singular behavior in solid mechanics, to date there has been relatively little explicit identification of stress singularities caused by fluid flows. In this study, stress and pressure singularities induced by steady flows of viscous incompressible fluids are asymptotically identified. This is done by taking advantage of an earlier result that the Navier–Stokes equations are locally governed by Stokes flow in angular corners. Findings for power singularities are confirmed by developing and using an analogy with solid mechanics. This analogy also facilitates the identification of flow-induced log singularities. Both types of singularity are further confirmed for two global configurations by applying convergence–divergence checks to numerical results. Even though these flow-induced stress singularities are analogous to singularities in solid mechanics, they nonetheless render a number of structural configurations singular that were not previously appreciated as such from identifications within solid mechanics alone.
