Land-use and climate change are among the greatest threats facing biodiversity, but understanding their combined effects has been hampered by modelling and data limitations, resulting in part from the very different scales at which land-use and climate processes operate. I combine two different modelling paradigms to predict the separate and combined (additive) effects of climate and land-use change on terrestrial vertebrate communities under four different scenarios. I predict that climate-change effects are likely to become a major pressure on biodiversity in the coming decades, probably matching or exceeding the effects of land-use change by 2070. The combined effects of both pressures are predicted to lead to an average cumulative loss of 37.9% of species from vertebrate communities under 'business as usual' (uncertainty ranging from 15.7% to 54.2%). Areas that are predicted to experience the effects of both pressures are concentrated in tropical grasslands and savannahs. The results have important implications for the conservation of biodiversity in future, and for the ability of biodiversity to support important ecosystem functions, upon which humans rely.

Future effects of climate and land-use change on terrestrial vertebrate community diversity under different scenarios.

The savannah biome of sub-Saharan Africa harbours the highest diversity of ungulates (hoofed mammals) on Earth. In this review, we compile population genetic data from 19 codistributed ungulate taxa of the savannah biome and find striking concordance in the phylogeographic structuring of species. Data from across taxa reveal distinct regional lineages, which reflect the survival and divergence of populations in isolated savannah refugia during the climatic oscillations of the Pleistocene. Data from taxa across trophic levels suggest distinct savannah refugia were present in West, East, Southern and South-West Africa. Furthermore, differing Pleistocene evolutionary biogeographic scenarios are proposed for East and Southern Africa, supported by palaeoclimatic data and the fossil record. Environmental instability in East Africa facilitated several spatial and temporal refugia and is reflected in the high inter- and intraspecific diversity of the region. In contrast, phylogeographic data suggest a stable, long-standing savannah refuge in the south.

Comparative phylogeography of African savannah ungulates.

There is an urgent need for large-scale botanical data to improve our understanding of community assembly, coexistence, biogeography, evolution, and many other fundamental biological processes. Understanding these processes is critical for predicting and handling human-biodiversity interactions and global change dynamics such as food and energy security, ecosystem services, climate change, and species invasions.
The Botanical Information and Ecology Network (BIEN) database comprises an unprecedented wealth of cleaned and standardised botanical data, containing roughly 81 million occurrence records from c. 375,000 species, c. 915,000 trait observations across 28 traits from c. 93,000 species, and co-occurrence records from 110,000 ecological plots globally, as well as 100,000 range maps and 100 replicated phylogenies (each containing 81,274 species) for New World species. Here, we describe an r package that provides easy access to these data.
The bien r package allows users to access the multiple types of data in the BIEN database. Functions in this package query the BIEN database by turning user inputs into optimised PostgreSQL functions. Function names follow a convention designed to make it easy to understand what each function does. We have also developed a protocol for providing customised citations and herbarium acknowledgements for data downloaded through the bien r package.
The development of the BIEN database represents a significant achievement in biological data integration, cleaning and standardization. Likewise, the bien r package represents an important tool for open science that makes the BIEN database freely and easily accessible to everyone.

The BIEN R package: A tool to access the Botanical Information and Ecology Network (BIEN) database

Dams contribute to water security, energy supply, and flood protection but also fragment habitats of freshwater species. Yet, a global species-level assessment of dam-induced fragmentation is lacking. Here, we assessed the degree of fragmentation of the occurrence ranges of ∼10,000 lotic fish species worldwide due to ∼40,000 existing large dams and ∼3,700 additional future large hydropower dams. Per river basin, we quantified a connectivity index (CI) for each fish species by combining its occurrence range with a high-resolution hydrography and the locations of the dams. Ranges of nondiadromous fish species were more fragmented (less connected) (CI = 73 ± 28%; mean ± SD) than ranges of diadromous species (CI = 86 ± 19%). Current levels of fragmentation were highest in the United States, Europe, South Africa, India, and China. Increases in fragmentation due to future dams were especially high in the tropics, with declines in CI of ∼20 to 40 percentage points on average across the species in the Amazon, Niger, Congo, Salween, and Mekong basins. Our assessment can guide river management at multiple scales and in various domains, including strategic hydropower planning, identification of species and basins at risk, and prioritization of restoration measures, such as dam removal and construction of fish bypasses.

Impacts of current and future large dams on the geographic range connectivity of freshwater fish worldwide.

Just protecting Earth’s wilderness will not be sufficient to conserve most of its species; quality, not overall size, matters. It is theoretically possible to protect large fractions of species in relatively small regions. For plants, 85% of species occur entirely within just over a third of the Earth’s land surface, carefully optimized to maximize the species captured. Well-known vertebrate taxa show similar patterns. Protecting half of Earth might not be necessary, but would it be sufficient given the current trends of protection? The predilection of national governments is to protect areas that are “wild,” that is, typically remote, cold, or arid. Unfortunately, those areas often hold relatively few species. Wild places likely afford the easier opportunities for the future expansion of protected areas, with the expansion into human-dominated landscapes the greater challenge. We identify regions that are not currently protected, but that are wild, and consider which of them hold substantial numbers of especially small-ranged vertebrate species. We assess how successful the strategy of protecting the wilder half of Earth might be in conserving biodiversity. It is far from sufficient. (Protecting large wild places for reasons other than biodiversity protection, such as carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services, might still have importance.) Unexpectedly, we also show that, despite the bias in establishing large protected areas in wild places to date, numerous small protected areas are in biodiverse places. They at least partially protect significant fractions of especially small-ranged species. So, while a preoccupation with protecting large areas for the sake of getting half of Earth might achieve little for biodiversity, there is more progress in protecting high-biodiversity areas than currently appreciated. Continuing to prioritize the right parts of Earth, not just the total area protected, is what matters for biodiversity.

Abstract Background Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the heart muscle commonly caused by viral infections. Vaccines can also cause myocarditis although the occurrence of this side effect is very rare. In the course of the Sars Cov 2 pandemic, there have been myocarditis both related to the virus and related to the anti–virus vaccine (especially related to RNA vaccines). We present a case of myocarditis from Comirnaty. 23 year old sportsman. In anamnesis only frequent tonsillitis in school age leading him to tonsillectomy at 18 years old. June 2021 1st dose Pfizer vaccine. Next day in ER for fever, headache, nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain. Brain CT: neg; Blood tests: slight increase in Gb 14,200 (109 / L) (neutrophils 88%) which drop the next day to 9,000 and a slight increase in CRP which from 0.19 mg / dl (nv < 0.5) reaches the value of 1.5. Of note a slight increase in CPKs stable in the two samples (CPK 602 U / l –> 652); August 2021 2nd dose of Pfizer vaccine. From 6th to 12th day post vaccine intense headache. Chest pain on the 13th day. In ER ECG with diffuse elevated ST. Trop I 12888 (vn < 50); Echocardium: normal. Trop I peak 45795 ng / l; Bisoprolol 1.25 mg started for a 6–beat TVNS. CardiacMRI: FE 67%, T2–weighted sequences: anterior and lateral intramural hyperintensity, sequences after contrast medium: large areas of late intramural enhacement in the apical and middle anterior wall and in the lateral wall, suggestive for myocarditis. In discharge recommended suspension of competitive physical activity. 3 months later inspection: pz in excellent condition. Echocardium: normal. CardiacMRI: reduction of ventricular volumes (EDV Vsx 187 ml –> 136) (EDV Vdx 227 ml –> 195) areas of intramural fibrosis reduced at the level of the lateral wall. Discussion Post vaccine myocarditis cases are rare but more frequent than reported in pivotal studies. The incidence varies according to the different registers. There seems to be an increase in incidence compared to the general population but not compared to the population affected by Sars Cov2. As confirmed by our case, this pathology is more frequent in young men and appears mainly after the 2nd dose. The pathogenetic mechanism of this reaction is still uncertain. The short–term prognosis of the disease is generally benign even if a longer follow–up is necessary in order to observe the evolution of the clinical status over time
