The toxicology of mercury--current exposures and clinical manifestations.
TL;DR: Whereas removal of certain forms of mercury, such as that in blood-pressure cuffs, will not cause increased health risks, removal of each of the three major sources described in this article entails health risks and thus poses a dilemma to the health professional.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Prenatal and Postnatal Methylmercury Exposure From Fish Consumption on Neurodevelopment Outcomes at 66 Months of Age in the Seychelles Child Development Study
Philip W. Davidson,Gary J. Myers,Christopher Cox,C. D. Axtell,Conrad F. Shamlaye,Jean Sloane-Reeves,Elsa Cernichiari,Larry L. Needham,A. Choi,Yining Wang,Maths Berlin,Thomas W. Clarkson +11 more
TL;DR: In the population studied, consumption of a diet high in ocean fish appears to pose no threat to developmental outcomes through 66 months of age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prenatal methylmercury exposure from ocean fish consumption in the Seychelles child development study.
Gary J. Myers,Philip W. Davidson,Christopher Cox,Christopher Cox,Conrad F. Shamlaye,Donna Palumbo,Elsa Cernichiari,Jean Sloane-Reeves,Gregory E. Wilding,James Kost,Li-Shan Huang,Thomas W. Clarkson +11 more
TL;DR: Prenatal MeHg exposure was associated with decreased performance in the grooved pegboard using the non-dominant hand in males and improved scores in the hyperactivity index of the Conner's teacher rating scale, and Covariates affecting child development were appropriately associated with endpoints.
Journal ArticleDOI
Outcome of symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus infection: results of long-term longitudinal follow-up.
TL;DR: Thirty-four patients with congenital cytomegalovirus infection who were symptomatic as newborns were followed in a special clinic providing periodic medical and visual examinations as well as psychometric testing and audiometry, finding evidence of central nervous system or auditory handicaps.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fetal Methylmercury Poisoning: Relationship Between Concentration in Single Strands of Maternal Hair and Child Effects
David O. Marsh,Thomas W. Clarkson,Christopher Cox,Gary J. Myers,Laman Amin-Zaki,Sa'adoun Al-Tikriti +5 more
TL;DR: Analysis of single hair strands provides a better index of acute or subacute fetal exposure than analysis of bundles of hair; the duration and degree of exposure are more accurately defined.
