Abstract: Investigators have long been seeking to identify the factors, occurring after acute myocardial infarction, that are important in the pathophysiology of "pump failure" and shock. Although cardiogenic shock had been known to be due to loss of functioning left ventricular muscle, investigators have been unable to agree on the relation between infarct size and shock. This divergence of opinion may have resulted from inadequate identification and quantification of nonviable myocardium.
