Abstract: A class of adaptive wavelet transforms that map integers to integers based on the adaptive update lifting scheme is presented. The main feature in the adaptive update lifting scheme is that the update lifting step, which is considered as an averaging operator and is performed prior to the prediction step, is adapted to the underlying signal content and the adaptivity decisions can be recovered at the synthesis transform without bookkeeping of the adaptivity decisions. The perfect reconstruction criterion for the integer realisation of such transforms are presented in this paper. These adaptive integer-to-integer wavelet transforms can be used in scalable lossless image coding applications. The lossless image coding and spatially scalable decoding performances are demonstrated.

Abstract: An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a focal dilation of the abdominal aorta, that if not treated, tends to grow and may rupture. The most common treatment for AAAs is the endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), which requires that patients undergo Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA)-based post-operative lifelong surveillance due to the possible appearance of complications. These complications may again lead to AAA dilation and rupture. However, there is a lack of advanced quantitative image-analysis tools to support the clinicians in the follow-up. Currently, the approach is to evaluate AAA diameter changes along time to infer the progress of the patient and the post-operative risk of AAA rupture. An increased AAA diameter is usually associated with a higher rupture risk, but there are some small AAAs that rupture, whereas other larger aneurysms remain stable. This means that the diameter-based rupture risk assessment is not suitable for all the cases, and there is increasing evidence that the biomechanical behavior of the AAA may provide additional valuable information regarding the progression of the disease and the risk of rupture. Hence, we propose a promising methodology for post-operative CTA time-series registration and subsequent aneurysm biomechanical strain analysis. From these strains, quantitative image-based descriptors are extracted using a principal component analysis of the tensile and compressive strain fields. Evaluated on 22 patients, our approach yields a mean area under the curve of 88.6% when correlating the strain-based quantitative descriptors with the long-term patient prognosis. This suggests that the strain information directly extracted from the CTA images is able to capture the biomechanical behavior of the aneurysm without relying on finite element modeling and simulation. Furthermore, the extracted descriptors set the basis for possible future imaging biomarkers that may be used in clinical practice. Apart from the diameter, these biomarkers may be used to assess patient prognosis and to enable informed decision making after an EVAR intervention, especially in difficult uncertain cases.

Abstract: Cochlear implantation (CI) surgery is a very successful technique, performed on more than 300,000 people worldwide. However, since the challenge resides in obtaining an accurate surgical planning, computational models are considered to provide such accurate tools. They allow us to plan and simulate beforehand surgical procedures in order to maximally optimize surgery outcomes, and consequently provide valuable information to guide pre-operative decisions. The aim of this work is to develop and validate computational tools to completely assess the patient-specific functional outcome of the CI surgery. A complete automatic framework was developed to create and assess computationally CI models, focusing on the neural response of the auditory nerve fibers (ANF) induced by the electrical stimulation of the implant. The framework was applied to evaluate the effects of ANF degeneration and electrode intra-cochlear position on nerve activation. Results indicate that the intra-cochlear positioning of the electrode has a strong effect on the global performance of the CI. Lateral insertion provides better neural responses in case of peripheral process degeneration, and it is recommended, together with optimized intensity levels, in order to preserve the internal structures. Overall, the developed automatic framework provides an insight into the global performance of the implant in a patient-specific way. This enables to further optimize the functional performance and helps to select the best CI configuration and treatment strategy for a given patient.

It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Abstract: In this article, we have reviewed the reasons why we (collectively) want to love or leave the venerable (but perhaps hoary) MSE. We have also reviewed emerging alternative signal fidelity measures and discussed their potential application to a wide variety of problems. The message we are trying to send here is not that one should abandon use of the MSE nor to blindly switch to any other particular signal fidelity measure. Rather, we hope to make the point that there are powerful, easy-to-use, and easy-to-understand alternatives that might be deployed depending on the application environment and needs. While we expect (and indeed, hope) that the MSE will continue to be widely used as a signal fidelity measure, it is our greater desire to see more advanced signal fidelity measures being used, especially in applications where perceptual criteria might be relevant. Ideally, the performance of a new signal processing algorithm might be compared to other algorithms using several fidelity criteria. Lastly, we hope that we have given further motivation to the community to consider recent advanced signal fidelity measures as design criteria for optimizing signal processing algorithms and systems. It is in this direction that we believe that the greatest benefit eventually lies.

Abstract: The development of the Internet in recent years has made it possible and useful to access many different information systems anywhere in the world to obtain information. While there is much research on the integration of heterogeneous information systems, most commercial systems stop short of the actual integration of available data. Data fusion is the process of fusing multiple records representing the same real-world object into a single, consistent, and clean representation.This article places data fusion into the greater context of data integration, precisely defines the goals of data fusion, namely, complete, concise, and consistent data, and highlights the challenges of data fusion, namely, uncertain and conflicting data values. We give an overview and classification of different ways of fusing data and present several techniques based on standard and advanced operators of the relational algebra and SQL. Finally, the article features a comprehensive survey of data integration systems from academia and industry, showing if and how data fusion is performed in each.

Abstract: A fast and effective image fusion method is proposed for creating a highly informative fused image through merging multiple images. The proposed method is based on a two-scale decomposition of an image into a base layer containing large scale variations in intensity, and a detail layer capturing small scale details. A novel guided filtering-based weighted average technique is proposed to make full use of spatial consistency for fusion of the base and detail layers. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can obtain state-of-the-art performance for fusion of multispectral, multifocus, multimodal, and multiexposure images.
