TL;DR: This brief shows that introducing the statistical local approach into nonlinear statistical process control produces statistics that follow a normal distribution, thereby enabling a simple statistical inference for fault detection.
Abstract: This brief examines the application of nonlinear statistical process control to the detection and diagnosis of faults in automotive engines. In this statistical framework, the computed score variables may have a complicated nonparametric distribution function, which hampers statistical inference, notably for fault detection and diagnosis. This brief shows that introducing the statistical local approach into nonlinear statistical process control produces statistics that follow a normal distribution, thereby enabling a simple statistical inference for fault detection. Further, for fault diagnosis, this brief introduces a compensation scheme that approximates the fault condition signature. Experimental results from a Volkswagen 1.9-L turbo-charged diesel engine are included.

TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of an air-cycle refrigeration unit for road transport was analyzed in detail and compared with the original design model and an equivalent Thermo King SL200 vapour-cycle unit.
Abstract: The performance of an air-cycle refrigeration unit for road transport, which had been previously reported, was analysed in detail and compared with the original design model and an equivalent Thermo King SL200 vapour-cycle refrigeration unit. Poor heat exchanger performance was found to be the major contributor to low coefficient of performance values. Using state-of-the-art, but achievable performance levels for turbomachinery and heat exchangers, the performance of an optimised air-cycle refrigeration unit for the same application was predicted. The power requirement of the optimised air-cycle unit was 7% greater than the equivalent vapour-cycle unit at full-load operation. However, at part-load operation the air-cycle unit was estimated to absorb 35% less power than the vapour-cycle unit. The analysis demonstrated that the air-cycle system could potentially match the overall fuel consumption of the vapour-cycle transport refrigeration unit, while delivering the benefit of a completely refrigerant free system.

TL;DR: A nonlinearity measure for principal component models is introduced based on the following two principles: the range of recorded process operation is divided into smaller regions, and accuracy bounds are determined for the sum of the discarded eigenvalues.

TL;DR: In this paper, an extensive performance investigation has been conducted on a radial turbine with three different vaneless volutes and three corresponding vaned stators, and the results showed that the vaneless turbines were shown to deliver a significant efficiency advantage over the vaned turbines at all operating conditions.
Abstract: An extensive performance investigation has been conducted on a radial turbine with three different vaneless volutes and three corresponding vaned stators. Previously published comparisons have been based on turbines with unmatched flow rates, meaning that the impact of stator losses was not isolated from rotor and exit losses. Each vaned stator configuration tested in this investigation matched the flow rate of the corresponding vaneless volute to within 1%. The volutes and the vaned stators were all machined in order to achieve high quality and comparable surface finishes. At all operating conditions, the vaneless volutes were shown to deliver a significant efficiency advantage over the vaned stators. However, the vaneless volute turbines did not demonstrate any greater tolerance for off-design operating conditions than the vaned stator configurations. Full performance data are presented for the six different turbine configurations tested and a one-dimensional turbine performance model is evaluated as a means of predicting and extrapolating turbine performance.

Abstract: Data-based process monitoring has become a key technology in process industries for safety, quality, and operation efficiency enhancement. This paper provides a timely update review on this topic. First, the natures of different industrial processes are revealed with their data characteristics analyzed. Second, detailed terminologies of the data-based process monitoring method are illustrated. Third, based on each of the main data characteristics that exhibits in the process, a corresponding problem is defined and illustrated, with review conducted with detailed discussions on connection and comparison of different monitoring methods. Finally, the relevant research perspectives and several promising issues are highlighted for future work.

Abstract: This is the second-part paper of the survey on fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant techniques, where fault diagnosis methods and applications are overviewed, respectively, from the knowledge-based and hybrid/active viewpoints. With the aid of the first-part survey paper, the second-part review paper completes a whole overview on fault diagnosis techniques and their applications. Comments on the advantages and constraints of various diagnosis techniques, including model-based, signal-based, knowledge-based, and hybrid/active diagnosis techniques, are also given. An overlook on the future development of fault diagnosis is presented.

TL;DR: A review of the turn of events and points of view of biogas in and its utilization for power, heat and in transport in the European Union (EU) and its Member States is presented in this article.
Abstract: This paper presents a review of the turn of events and points of view of biogas in and its utilization for power, heat and in transport in the European Union (EU) and its Member States. Biogas creation has expanded in the EU, empowered by the sustainable power strategies, notwithstanding monetary, ecological and atmosphere benefits, to arrive at 18 billion m3 methane (654 PJ) in 2015, speaking to half of the worldwide biogas creation. The EU is the world chief in biogas power creation, with more than 10 GW introduced and various 17,400 biogas plants, in contrast with the worldwide biogas limit of 15 GW in 2015. In the EU, biogas conveyed 127 TJ of warmth and 61 TWh of power in 2015; about half of absolute biogas utilization in Europe was bound to warm age. Europe is the world's driving maker of biomethane for the utilization as a vehicle fuel or for infusion into the petroleum gas network, with 459 plants in 2015 creating 1.2 billion m3 and 340 plants taking care of into the gas network, with a limit of 1.5 million m3. Around 697 biomethane filling stations guaranteed the utilization 160 million m3 of biomethane as a transport fuel in 2015.
