Abstract: The use of laser Doppler vibrometry (LDVi) offers great potential for the improvement of the investigation capability of experimental vibration testing. Because of this, this technique is studied and applied with increasing interest in several industrial and scientific areas of research, including biomedical engineering. In particular, the traditional fields of vibration testing, such as damage detection, system identification, and model updating, benefit from the use of these novel techniques. In fact, they significantly extend measurement capabilities with respect to traditional accelerometers, as they allow remote, nonintrusive, high-spatial resolution measurements with reduced testing time and increased performances (bandwidth up to 200 kHz, velocity range of ±10 m/s, resolution of about 8 nm in displacement and 0.5 μm/s in velocity). In this work, the state of the art in LDVi technique is addressed, and the new instrument configurations, such as those for in-plane and rotational vibration measurements, are described. A review of the most innovative LDVi advances is presented with reference to recent publications, and the different methodologies are categorized according to their relative fields of application. Interesting results achieved by continuously controlling the movement of scanning LDVi mirrors are shown: measurements in tracking mode on rotating objects or continuous scanning for operational mode shapes determination are examples of these activities. Also, actual limits and fields of future research are discussed. The main limitations in LDVi instrumentation are actually represented by speckle effects and poor signal-to-noise ratio when measuring on low diffusive surfaces. For these problems, the research is continuing to develop, and important improvements are expected within the next few years.

Abstract: This paper presents a case study of a wireless sensor network (WSN) to support energy management utilizing Web services and middleware technologies. The approach presented proposes the integration of WSNs with Ethernet/Internet/XML/Web Service communications into a ‘knowledge and information services’ platform to support energy management which can be accessed via a Web service to support inhabitant actions to reduce energy demand. It is based on the idea of collecting energy information using various wireless devices operating with different communication standards. This is important as there are various communication standards developed for WSNs including ZigBee, 6LoWPAN, Wi-Fi, WirelessHART and ISA100.11a. The hardware components which are needed for a system using one specific communication standard cannot be used directly within another system, due to differences in firmware, radio components, communication standards, and in some cases profile parameters. This is problematic because the components of different systems cannot be mixed and used in combination in order to take advantage of the most useful aspects of products from multiple vendors. The concept and initial testing of the WSN presented in this paper goes beyond current approaches as it uses various wireless devices operating with different communication standards, which can support Web based services for building managers, owners and inhabitants.

Abstract: Renewable energy sources have gained much attention due to the recent energy crisis and the urge to get clean energy. Among the main options being studied, wind energy is a strong contender because of its reliability due to the maturity of the technology, good infrastructure and relative cost competitiveness. In order to harvest wind energy more efficiently, the size of wind turbines has become physically larger, making maintenance and repair works difficult. In order to improve safety considerations, to minimize down time, to lower the frequency of sudden breakdowns and associated huge maintenance and logistic costs and to provide reliable power generation, the wind turbines must be monitored from time to time to ensure that they are in good condition. Among all the monitoring systems, the structural health monitoring (SHM) system is of primary importance because it is the structure that provides the integrity of the system. SHM systems and the related non-destructive test and evaluation methods are discussed in this review. As many of the methods function on local damage, the types of damage that occur commonly in relation to wind turbines, as well as the damage hot spots, are also included in this review.

Abstract: The author details the reactions of various concretes on steel reinforcement. Although portland cements, slag cements and high alumina cements are all hydraulic binders, each possess special properties which are examined. The discussion of causes and methods of preventing the corrosion of steel reinforcement covers such aspects as galvanised steel reinforcement, effects of concrete composition, corrosion of steel reinforcments in concrete and prestressed reinforcement. It is concluded that the most significant influences on the corrosion of prestressing wire in concrete are: the presence of chloride; the presence of nitrates; the composition of the concrete; the degree of carbonation of the concrete; concrete compaction and, chlorides and sulphates should be used as far as possible when steel is embedded.
