Defective Plasma Antioxidant Defenses and Enhanced Susceptibility to Lipid Peroxidation in Uncomplicated IDDM
Stefano Angelo Santini,G. Marra,Bruno Giardina,P Cotroneo,Alvaro Mordente,Giuseppe Ettore Martorana,Andrea Manto,Giovanni Ghirlanda +7 more
TL;DR: The reduced TRAP and the increased ROOH and conjugated diene plasma levels, together with the decreased ratio of cis-trans/trans-trans conjugate dienes, indicate that in IDDM patients, oxidative stress is enhanced and antioxidant defenses are defective, regardless of diabetes duration, metabolic control, or presence of complications.
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of mitochondria in pharmacotoxicology: a reevaluation of an old, newly emerging topic
TL;DR: The aim of this review is to highlight the role of mitochondria in pharmacotoxicology, and to describe whenever possible the main molecular mechanisms underlying unwanted and/or therapeutic effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lycopene and cardiovascular diseases: an update.
Alvaro Mordente,Barbara Guantario,Elisabetta Meucci,Andrea Silvestrini,E. Lombardi,Giuseppe Ettore Martorana,Bruno Giardina,Volker Böhm +7 more
TL;DR: The review intends to conduct a systematic analysis of the literature in order to critically evaluate the association between lycopene (or tomato products) supplementation and cardiovascular diseases and/or cardiovascular disease risk factors progression, and to prepare provision of evidence-based guidelines for patients and clinicians.
Metal-catalyzed Oxidation of Human Serum Albumin: Conformational and Functional Changes
TL;DR: Conformational stability evaluated through thermal shock and addition of moderate amounts of guanidine indicate that the oxidized protein is more heat-resistant, less flexible, and more rigid than the native one.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antioxidant properties of 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-(10-hydroxydecyl)-1,4-benzoquinone (idebenone)
TL;DR: It is proposed that the neuroprotective effects of idebenone can be attributed, at least in part, to its ability to function as an antioxidant, involving redox cycling between hydroquinone and quinone.
