This review article identifies and discusses some of main issues and potential problems - paradoxes and pathologies - around the communication of recorded information, and points to some possible solutions. The article considers the changing contexts of information communication, with some caveats about the identification of `pathologies of information', and analyses the changes over time in the way in which issues of the quantity and quality of information available have been regarded. Two main classes of problems and issues are discussed. The first comprises issues relating to the quantity and diversity of information available: information overload, information anxiety, etc. The second comprises issues relating to the changing information environment with the advent of Web 2.0: loss of identity and authority, emphasis on micro-chunking and shallow novelty, and the impermanence of information. A final section proposes some means of solution of problems and of improvements to the situation.

In a time of increasing financial pressures on universities, the expense of library resources—and the potential for cost inflation—threaten the academic library collection. This article asks whether the academic library media center will be able to continue to offer a stable inventory of films, given the legal and commercial structures currently in place. It provides a history of the film industry’s interactions with its intermediaries, forecasts some of the obstacles to ongoing feature film affordability and access in libraries, offers strategies for librarians, and suggests some cause for hope.

House of Cards: The Academic Library Media Center in the Era of Streaming Video

Public library services, particularly in the USA, have successfully and imaginatively implemented Web 2.0 tools in a variety of ways. These include improving access to content for library users, opening up dialogue with them, and showing them more about what their library can do for them. This article describes how some of these libraries have used the tools for their virtual services, a discovery made during a study tour in 2007, and how they have progressed into 2008 with the same services.

Virtual Services on the Edge: Innovative Use of Web Tools in Public Libraries

Facilities Guidelines (TS-AFG) has continued to review the facility guidelines, assess their application, evaluate new research, and solicit comments and reviews. This document supplies the first draft revisions to the 2009 standards for archival facilities. Not all chapters have been included here. The chapters included in this review draft are in the early stages of development, have not been formally edited or formatted, and do not include related graphs, charts, text boxes and photographs. They have not been reviewed by the SAA Standards Committee, the SAA Council, or outside groups and individuals. Please note that the chapters are early drafts and some material will be cut or reduced to tables and charts in the final drafting. We are making them available at this time for informal review at the Society of American Archivists meeting being held in Washington, DC in August 2014. We have found that the annual conference is an excellent time to discuss our work on archival facilities with colleagues. Archival and special collections facilities : guidelines for archivists, librarians, architects, and engineers

This article explores attributes that correlate with the perception of news overload and the extent to which Spaniards feel overloaded, or not, with the amount of news available. Specifically, this study explores the following attributes: demographics (age, gender, and income), news interest, and consumer paying behavior for online news. The research methods employ a quantitative, explorative approach with data collected from an online survey of 1,439 Spanish adults, 18 years and older, in January 2013.Finally, managerial and theoretical implications are discussed.
