Principles of Distributed Database Systems

A federated database system (FDBS) is a collection of cooperating database systems that are autonomous and possibly heterogeneous. In this paper, we define a reference architecture for distributed database management systems from system and schema viewpoints and show how various FDBS architectures can be developed. We then define a methodology for developing one of the popular architectures of an FDBS. Finally, we discuss critical issues related to developing and operating an FDBS.

Federated database systems for managing distributed, heterogeneous, and autonomous databases

A method of and system for collecting, storing, and retrieving data in a database management system. The database management system includes a master database server (4), at least one workgroup server (315), and a plurality of workgroup user clients (310). The workgroup server (315) is interposed between the master database server (4) and said workgroup user clients (310). The method creating a transaction in a local database resident on one of the workgroup user clients (310), entering the transaction into a transaction log resident on the workgroup user client (310), and creating a transaction file corresponding to the transaction in an outbox of said workgroup user client (310). Next, the transaction file is copied to an inbox identified to the workgroup user client (310) and updating the transaction file into a workgroup database (305) resident on the workgroup server (315). The workgroup database (305) includes a transaction log.

Partially replicated distributed database with multiple levels of remote clients

A multidatabase system (MDBS) is a facility that allows users access to data located in multiple autonomous database management systems (DBMSs). In such a system, global transactions are executed under the control of the MDBS. Independently, local transactions are executed under the control of the local DBMSs. Each local DBMS integrated by the MDBS may employ a different transaction management scheme. In addition, each local DBMS has complete control over all transactions (global and local) executing at its site, including the ability to abort at any point any of the transactions executing at its site. Typically, no design or internal DBMS structure changes are allowed in order to accommodate the MDBS. Furthermore, the local DBMSs may not be aware of each other and, as a consequence, cannot coordinate their actions. Thus, traditional techniques for ensuring transaction atomicity and consistency in homogeneous distributed database systems may not be appropriate for an MDBS environment. The objective of this article is to provide a brief review of the most current work in the area of multidatabase transaction management. We first define the problem and argue that the multidatabase research will become increasingly important in the coming years. We then outline basic research issues in multidatabase transaction management and review recent results in the area. We conclude with a discussion of open problems and practical implications of this research.

Overview of multidatabase transaction management

In a multidatabase system, schematic conflicts between two objects are usually of interest only when the objects have some semantic similarity. We use the concept of semantic proximity, which is essentially an abstraction/mapping between the domains of the two objects associated with the context of comparison. An explicit though partial context representation is proposed and the specificity relationship between contexts is defined. The contexts are organized as a meet semi-lattice and associated operations like the greatest lower bound are defined. The context of comparison and the type of abstractions used to relate the two objects form the basis of a semantic taxonomy. At the semantic level, the intensional description of database objects provided by the context is expressed using description logics. The terms used to construct the contexts are obtained from {\em domain-specific ontologies}. Schema correspondences are used to store mappings from the semantic level to the data level and are associated with the respective contexts. Inferences about database content at the federation level are modeled as changes in the context and the associated schema correspondences. We try to reconcile the dual (schematic and semantic) perspectives by enumerating possible semantic similarities between objects having schema and data conflicts, and modeling schema correspondences as the projection of semantic proximity with respect to (wrt) context.

Semantic and schematic similarities between database objects: a context-based approach

This paper describes the approach to database integration in a heterogeneous distributed database environment utilized by the Amoco Distributed Database System (ADDS). We start with the definition of the extended relational data model that is used by ADDS for database integration. We demonstrate various aspects of resolving possible data conflicts occurring in the database integration process. The ADDS query and data definition languages are defined and their expressive power is discussed. We conclude with presentation of a query conversion algorithm to convert a user data request into a set of queries against supported physical databases.

Database integration in a distributed heterogeneous database system

A model of a multidatabase system is defined in which each local DBMS uses the two-phase locking protocol Locks are released by a global transaction only after the transaction commits or aborts at each local site. Failures may occur during the processing of transactions. We design a fault tolerant transaction management algorithm and recovery procedures that retain global database consistency. We also show that our algorithms ensure freedom from global deadlocks of any kind.

Reliable transaction management in a multidatabase system

A fault-tolerant method and system for processing global transactions in a distributed database system. If a fault occurs in the distributed database system, a transaction management system will suspend the processing of a transaction and renew it when the fault is remedied. The transaction management system identifies one or more sites in the distributed database system that contain data needed for a global transaction and divides each transaction into subtransactions for processing at one or more identified sites. If a fault occurs in the distributed database system, the transaction management system maintains the status of each subtransaction. When a fault in the distributed database system is corrected, the transaction management system updates the status of each subtransaction and restarts processing of the transactions.
