Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: An acute diarrhea outbreak, with 2170 cases, was described during January to July, 2004, in Sao Bento do Una, Pernambuco, and an enteric pathogen was recovered in 25% (145 patients) of patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vibrio vulnificus as a health hazard for shrimp consumers.
Susy Margella Melo do Nascimento,Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes Vieira,Grace Nazareth Diogo Theophilo,Dália dos Prazeres Rodrigues,Gustavo Hitzschky Fernandes Vieira +4 more
TL;DR: This study aimed at isolating and identifying strains of V. vulnificus based upon the analysis of twenty samples of seabob shrimp, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller), purchased at the Mucuripe fish market (Fortaleza, Brazil).
Journal ArticleDOI
Antibiotic resistance of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from pond-reared Litopenaeus vannamei marketed in Natal, Brazil
Ligia Maria Rodrigues de Melo,Dulce Almeida,Ernesto Hofer,Cristhiane Moura Falavina dos Reis,Grace Nazareth Diogo Theophilo,André Felipe das Mercês Santos,Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes Vieira +6 more
TL;DR: Ten out of fifty fresh and refrigerated samples of shrimp collected from retailers in Natal (Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil) tested positive for Vibrio parahaemolyticus, indicating a considerable risk of propagation of antibiotic resistance throughout the food chain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genomic Diversity of Clinical and Environmental Vibrio cholerae Strains Isolated in Brazil between 1991 and 2001 as Revealed by Fluorescent Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism Analysis
Fabiano L. Thompson,Cristiane C. Thompson,Ana Carolina Paulo Vicente,Grace Nazareth Diogo Theophilo,Ernesto Hofer,Jean Swings +5 more
TL;DR: The persistence of some strains of highly related genomes during several years and in completely different geographical regions suggests that these strains are highly successful in adapting to changing environmental conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
DETECTION OF VIRULENCE GENES IN ENVIRONMENTAL STRAINS OF Vibrio cholerae FROM ESTUARIES IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL
Francisca Gleire Rodrigues de Menezes,Soraya da Silva Neves,Oscarina Viana de Sousa,Candida Machado Vieira Maia Vila-Nova,Rodrigo Maggioni,Grace Nazareth Diogo Theophilo,Ernesto Hofer,Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes Vieira +7 more
TL;DR: The dichotomous key was efficient at differentiating environmental strains of V. cholerae and searched for virulence factors in the environmental isolates but none possessed virulence genes.
