It also presents an overview of recent developments in the tourism and hospitality industry and presents some statistics and trends relating to prospects for the tourism and hospitality industry in India.,Emerging trends emanate from various official reports and expert views. The paper also highlights key issues and areas for investigation by the theme issue contributors.,Strong growth is predicted for the tourism and hospitality industry and some of the underpinning issues that will influence competitiveness are the role of social media, business model innovations, risk management, talent management, valuation models, the influence of information technology, employee loyalty and design thinking in hospitality higher education.,Given the expansion occurring in the domestic market in India and the involvement of international operators in the Indian environment, this paper will be of interest to practitioners with an interest in the emerging opportunities and challenging issues related in this dynamic marketplace.,This introductory paper captures the essence of the prevailing trends in the tourism and hospitality industry as a starting point for this theme issue.

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a background on developments in hospitality and tourism in India and its contribution to economic growth.Design/methodology/approach – The paper discusses the importance of customer experience and provides insights on destination management approaches. It reviews the factors beyond the control of a specific service provider which impact the consumer experience. The paper also discusses the tourism potential for selected spiritual and cultural sites and gives an overview of the approach followed to assess consumer experience at each of these locations.Findings – The paper focuses on elements that contribute to consumer experience at selected spiritual and cultural places. Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a practitioners' perspective on financial challenges prevalent in the Indian hospitality industry. The paper also makes an attempt to give useful insights into possible solutions to the issues raised.Design/methodology/approach – The study assimilates data from senior finance professionals from a spectrum of hotels in India. The study involves the collection of primary data through structured interviews.Findings – The study highlights that some of the financial challenges faced by the Indian hospitality industry include high financing costs, multiplicity of taxes charged, licensing and legal issues, working capital issues and eroding margins. The search was run in June 2017 for the last time and all early cite papers falling under the criteria were also included. This has ensured that key literature produced after the seminal work by Timothy and Olsen (Eds) (2006) has been reviewed. Abstract: Purpose
This study aims to examine the effect of interaction between market competition and management accounting system (MAS) characteristics on managerial performance. Scope of the study is concentrated on Iranian financial organizations and managers of these organizations were identified as respondents for the questionnaire survey.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used the SmartPLS to analyze the data, and the model of the study was estimated with structural equation modeling (SEM). It follows the recommended two-stage analytical procedures of SEM: assessing confirmatory measurement models (factor analysis) and confirmatory structural models (path analysis).
Findings
The study uncovered the existence of direct relationships between competition and MAS, and between MAS and managerial performance. The study also confirmed that the relationship between competition and managerial performance is mediated by MAS.
Research limitations/implications
The findings provide valuable insights to guide managers in financial organizations to improve their performance through suitable MAS by considering internal and environmental factors. Recommendations on how to improve MAS and managerial performance are provided accordingly.
Originality/value
Prior researches confirm that there is no unique and universal MAS for all organizations, as this depends on internal firm characteristics and environmental features. However, there has been a lack of empirical evidence on MAS researches in the service organizations.
