Occupant behavior modeling for building performance simulation: Current state and future challenges:
Da Yan,William O'Brien,Tianzhen Hong,Xiaohang Feng,H. Burak Gunay,Farhang Tahmasebi,Ardeshir Mahdavi +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the state-of-the-art research, current obstacles and future needs and directions for the following four-step iterative process: (1) occupant monitoring and data collection, (2) model development, (3) model evaluation, and (4) model implementation into building simulation tools.
Journal ArticleDOI
The contextual factors contributing to occupants' adaptive comfort behaviors in offices – A review and proposed modeling framework
William O'Brien,H. Burak Gunay +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a review-based framework is proposed to represent occupant behavior in buildings by arguing that occupants are not illogical and irrational but rather that they attempt to restore their comfort in the easiest way possible, but are influenced by many contextual factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
A critical review of observation studies, modeling, and simulation of adaptive occupant behaviors in offices
TL;DR: In this article, a review of the literature on occupant behaviors in building energy use is presented, and the authors discuss the limitations associated with their application, and develop recommendations for future work.
Journal ArticleDOI
Introducing IEA EBC annex 79: Key challenges and opportunities in the field of occupant-centric building design and operation
William O'Brien,Andreas Wagner,Marcel Schweiker,Marcel Schweiker,Ardeshir Mahdavi,Julia K. Day,Mikkel Baun Kjærgaard,Salvatore Carlucci,Bing Dong,Farhang Tahmasebi,Da Yan,Tianzhen Hong,H. Burak Gunay,Zoltan Nagy,Clayton Miller,Christiane Berger +15 more
TL;DR: The objective of this paper is to succinctly report on the leading research of the above topics and articulate the most pressing research needs – planned to be addressed by Annex 79 and beyond.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development and implementation of an adaptive lighting and blinds control algorithm
TL;DR: In this paper, an adaptive lighting and blinds control algorithm was proposed to reduce the lighting loads in office buildings without adversely affecting the occupant comfort, which was implemented inside controllers serving five private offices and a controls laboratory.
