Abstract: In this paper, the optimal probabilistic neural network (PNN) is proposed as the core classifier to discriminate between the magnetizing inrush and the internal fault of a power transformer. The particle swarm optimization is used to obtain an optimal smoothing factor of PNN which is a crucial parameter for PNN. An algorithm has been developed around the theme of the conventional differential protection of the transformer. It makes use of the ratio of voltage-to-frequency and amplitude of differential current for the determination of operating condition of the transformer. The performance of the proposed heteroscedastic-type PNN is investigated with the conventional homoscedastic-type PNN, feedforward back propagation (FFBP) neural network, and the conventional harmonic restraint method. To evaluate the developed algorithm, relaying signals for various operating condition of the transformer, including internal and external faults, are obtained by modeling the transformer in PSCAD/EMTDC. The protection algorithm is implemented by using MATLAB.

Abstract: As organizations search for more secure authentication methods for user access, e-commerce, and other security applications, biometrics is gaining increasing attention. With an increasing emphasis on the emerging automatic personal identification applications, fingerprint based identification is becoming more popular. The most widely used fingerprint representation is the minutiae based representation. The main drawback with this representation is that it does not utilize a significant component of the rich discriminatory information available in the fingerprints. Local ridge structures cannot be completely characterized by minutiae. Also, it is difficult quickly to match two fingerprint images containing different number of unregistered minutiae points. In this study filter bank based representation, which eliminates these weakness, is implemented and the overall performance of the developed system is tested. The results have shown that this system can be used effectively for secure online verification applications.

Abstract: An optimal probabilistic neural network (PNN) as a core classifier for fault detection and status indication of a power transformer has been presented. In this scheme, various operating conditions of a transformer are distinguished using signatures of the differential currents. The proposed differential protection scheme is implemented through two different structures of PNN, that is, one having one output and the other having five outputs. The developed algorithm is found to be stable against external fault, magnetising inrush, sympathetic inrush and over-excitation conditions for which relay operation is not required. For the test data of fault, it is found to operate successfully. The performance of proposed PNN and classical artificial neural network (ANN) has been compared. For evaluation of the developed algorithm, relaying signals for various operating conditions of a transformer are obtained by modelling the transformer in PSCAD/EMTDC. The algorithms are implemented using MATLAB. The results show the capability of PNN in terms of classification accuracy and speed in comparison to classical ANNs.

Abstract: Remote measurements of the cardiac pulse can provide comfortable physiological assessment without electrodes. However, attempts so far are non-automated, susceptible to motion artifacts and typically expensive. In this paper, we introduce a new methodology that overcomes these problems. This novel approach can be applied to color video recordings of the human face and is based on automatic face tracking along with blind source separation of the color channels into independent components. Using Bland-Altman and correlation analysis, we compared the cardiac pulse rate extracted from videos recorded by a basic webcam to an FDA-approved finger blood volume pulse (BVP) sensor and achieved high accuracy and correlation even in the presence of movement artifacts. Furthermore, we applied this technique to perform heart rate measurements from three participants simultaneously. This is the first demonstration of a low-cost accurate video-based method for contact-free heart rate measurements that is automated, motion-tolerant and capable of performing concomitant measurements on more than one person at a time.

Abstract: The QRS complex is the most striking waveform within the electrocardiogram (ECG). Since it reflects the electrical activity within the heart during the ventricular contraction, the time of its occurrence as well as its shape provide much information about the current state of the heart. Due to its characteristic shape it serves as the basis for the automated determination of the heart rate, as an entry point for classification schemes of the cardiac cycle, and often it is also used in ECG data compression algorithms. In that sense, QRS detection provides the fundamentals for almost all automated ECG analysis algorithms. Software QRS detection has been a research topic for more than 30 years. The evolution of these algorithms clearly reflects the great advances in computer technology. Within the last decade many new approaches to QRS detection have been proposed; for example, algorithms from the field of artificial neural networks genetic algorithms wavelet transforms, filter banks as well as heuristic methods mostly based on nonlinear transforms. The authors provide an overview of these recent developments as well as of formerly proposed algorithms.

Abstract: Breast cancer is the second-most common and leading cause of cancer death among women. It has become a major health issue in the world over the past 50 years, and its incidence has increased in recent years. Early detection is an effective way to diagnose and manage breast cancer. Computer-aided detection or diagnosis (CAD) systems can play a key role in the early detection of breast cancer and can reduce the death rate among women with breast cancer. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of recent advances in the development of CAD systems and related techniques. We begin with a brief introduction to some basic concepts related to breast cancer detection and diagnosis. We then focus on key CAD techniques developed recently for breast cancer, including detection of calcifications, detection of masses, detection of architectural distortion, detection of bilateral asymmetry, image enhancement, and image retrieval.
