One of the scientific success stories of fusion research over the past decade is the development of the ExB shear stabilization model to explain the formation of transport barriers in magnetic confinement devices. This model was originally developed to explain the transport barrier formed at the plasma edge in tokamaks after the L (low) to H (high) transition. This concept has the universality needed to explain the edge transport barriers seen in limiter and divertor tokamaks, stellarators, and mirror machines. More recently, this model has been applied to explain the further confinement improvement from H (high)-mode to VH (very high)-mode seen in some tokamaks, where the edge transport barrier becomes wider. Most recently, this paradigm has been applied to the core transport barriers formed in plasmas with negative or low magnetic shear in the plasma core. These examples of confinement improvement are of considerable physical interest; it is not often that a system self-organizes to a higher energy state with reduced turbulence and transport when an additional source of free energy is applied to it. The transport decrease that is associated with ExB velocity shear effects also has significant practical consequences for fusion research. The fundamental physics involved in transport reduction is the effect of ExB shear on the growth, radial extent and phase correlation of turbulent eddies in the plasma. The same fundamental transport reduction process can be operational in various portions of the plasma because there are a number ways to change the radial electric field Er. An important theme in this area is the synergistic effect of ExB velocity shear and magnetic shear. Although the ExB velocity shear appears to have an effect on broader classes of microturbulence, magnetic shear can mitigate some potentially harmful effects of ExB velocity shear and facilitate turbulence stabilization.

Effects of E×B velocity shear and magnetic shear on turbulence and transport in magnetic confinement devices

Internal transport barriers in tokamak plasmas are explored in order to improve confinement and stability beyond the reference scenario, used for the ITER extrapolation, and to achieve higher bootstrap current fractions as an essential part of non-inductive current drive. Internal transport barriers are produced by modifications of the current profile using external heating and current drive effects, often combined with partial freezing of the initial skin current profile. Thus, formerly inaccessible ion temperatures and QDTeq values have been (transiently) achieved. The present paper reviews the state of the art of these techniques and their effects on plasma transport in view of optimizing the confinement properties. Implications and limits for possible steady state operations and extrapolation to burning plasmas are discussed.

Charge-exchange spectroscopy in fusion plasmas entails the use of optical transitions that follow electron transfer from a neutral atom into an excited state of an impurity ion. In most applications, the sources of neutral particles are high-energy beams employed either for heating or for the specific purpose of active plasma diagnosis. The transitions following charge exchange are particularly useful for determining the densities of fully stripped low-Z ions and for measuring ion temperatures and plasma rotation, although they have also been exploited for other purposes. In this review, the atomic physics considerations for interpreting the data, including the influence of the plasma environment, are reviewed, and examples of recent applications to fusion studies are presented.

MHD Equilibrium Reconstruction in the DIII-D Tokamak

In toroidal magnetically confined plasmas, eigenmodes of Alfven waves can be destablized by energetic ions with velocities comparable to the Alfven velocity. With the advent of tokamak experiments in which populations of energetic ions can be introduced by neutral beam injection, radio frequency wave heating or by fusion reactions, major advances have been made in Alfven eigenmode research in the past 10 years. After introducing the basic concepts on the Alfven eigenmode instability, data on this subject from various toroidal devices are described, emphasizing the interplay between experiment and theory. Experimental results on mode identification, instability drive, mode damping and saturation, and energetic ion redistribution are compared with theory.

Polarimetry measurements of the Doppler-shifted H{sub {alpha}} emission from a neutral hydrogen beam on the PBX-M tokamak have been employed in a novel technique for obtaining {ital q}({ital r}) and magnetic field pitch-angle profiles using the Stark effect. The resulting {ital q}({ital r}) profile is very broad and its central value, {ital q}(0), is significantly below 1, which has important implications for theoretical models of sawteeth.

Polarimetry measurements of the Doppler-shifted H/sub ..cap alpha../ emission from a hydrogen neutral beam on the PBX-M tokamak have been employed in a novel technique for obtaining q(0) and poloidal magnetic field profiles. The electric field from the beam particle motion across the magnetic field (E = V/sub beam/ /times/ B) causes a wavelength splitting of several angstroms, and polarization of the emitted radiation (Stark effect). Viewed transverse to the fields, the emission is linearly polarized with the angle of polarization related to the direction of the magnetic field. 14 refs., 5 figs.
