Rubberized geopolymer composites: A comprehensive review

An estimate of over 1.5 billion waste tires are generated world over annually and the ongoing demand of tires is expected to appreciate by 4% reaching 3 billion units in year 2019. The black pollution created by this obstinately biodegradable waste poses a potential threat to environment. Scrap tires in landfills, scrap zones have direct effect on human health, contaminating soil and ground water due to the leaching effect of toxic metals present in tires. Concrete being the second most consumed material in the world, with 3 tons per year used for every person, partial incorporation of discarded tire into concrete, as aggregates, is an effective way of immobilizing waste, especially when 60–75% of concrete is made of aggregates. The main aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of utilizing shredded tire in concrete for structures and pavements through critical review of its rheological, static/dynamic mechanical, durability properties. Besides the study also envisages to explore different treatments, modifications and compositions for optimum utility of tire incorporated concrete/composites. The manuscript also intends to update the data base of shredded tire concrete/composites for further experimental and numerical investigation.

Scope of reusing waste shredded tires in concrete and cementitious composite materials: A review

There has been a growing awareness of the potential environmental impacts from the tire industry in the last two decades Life cycle assessment (LCA), as an efficient technique, was applied to quantify the environmental impacts of industrial tires through the four stages of life cycle, ie, production, transportation, use, and end-of-life In response to the rapid development of LCA applications on tires, this article conducted a comprehensive and critical review on the related literature The methodology, on-going trends, challenges, and future opportunities in the LCA study of tires are investigated based on a systematic review method It is found that most studies investigated the end-of-life stage of tires, while ignoring the transportation stage The use stage is the contributor to most environmental impacts in the entire life cycle of a tire Notably, the carbon emissions in the use stage range from 550 kg CO2 eq to 840 kg CO2 eq per car tire There are inconsistencies in several LCA aspects, ie, functional units, impact assessment methods, impact categories, etc To improve the environmental performance, the recovery of end-of-life tires (ELT), adoption of secondary materials, and new tire designs are recommended

Life cycle assessment of vehicle tires: A systematic review

Owing to the favorable properties of self-compacting concrete and light-weight aggregate concrete, the development of self-compacting concrete is an engineering excellence, although its application in civil engineering is limited due to a lack of in-depth research. The current review aimed to provide a detailed study of lightweight self-compacting concrete containing several types of natural and sustainable lightweight aggregates. As a primary constituent of lightweight self-compacting concrete, lightweight aggregates are mainly responsible for variation in strength and bulk density of concrete. The impact of different types of lightweight aggregate and other influential factors on workability, strength, and durability have been carefully discussed in this study which shows it is possible to develop lightweight self-compacting concrete even below the 1000 kg/m3 density. In addition, lightweight self-compacting concrete shows excellent frost resistance. The study is a novel initiative to accumulate findings of lightweight self-compacting concrete for its broad acceptance, and future scope of work. 

Lightweight self-compacting concrete: A review

This life cycle assessment (LCA) study compares energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental damages for two methods of constructing retaining structures, a traditional method involving a retaining wall backfilled with sand, and an alternative method involving a retaining wall backfilled with shredded tires. Taking into account the extraction and production of the used construction materials, loading, transport and installation, the cumulative energy demand (CED), global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential, Human Health Criteria Air-mobile, aquatic eutrophication potential, ozone depletion potential, and smog potential is determined for each construction method. The seven environmental impact categories are calculated using the software tool, ATHENA® Environmental Impact Estimator (ATHENA® EIE) for Buildings v5.2.0118. The seven impact categories were reduced significantly by using shredded tires as retaining wall backfill; this is due to the decrease in the amounts of concrete, reinforcing steel, and fuel quantity consumed by building machines and vehicles transporting construction materials. The study concludes that in all examined impact categories alternative method provides a larger environmental benefit than the traditional method. Also, the results clearly demonstrate that the use of shredded tires is very effective as a sustainable alternative to retaining structures.
