TL;DR: The automatic standby power cut-off outlet and a ZigBee controller with IR code learning functionality are proposed and designed to reduce standby power consumption and to make the room easily controllable with an IR remote control of a home appliance.
Abstract: This paper proposes remote-controllable and energy-saving room architecture to reduce standby power consumption and to make the room easily controllable with an IR remote control of a home appliance. To realize the proposed room architecture, we proposed and designed the automatic standby power cut-off outlet and a ZigBee controller with IR code learning functionality. The proposed power outlet monitors the power consumption for the predetermined time and completely cuts off the power supply when the monitored power is below the threshold. This power outlet has a function of changing the threshold power, which enables any kinds of home appliances to be applied to the power outlet. To efficiently manage the power outlets and the lights, we proposed the ZigBee controller with IR code learning functionality. The ZigBee controller has several onboard buttons to wake up the power outlets and control the dimming light. By using IR code learning functionality, the ZigBee controller can assign a certain IR code of a remote control of a home appliance to the power outlet or the dimming light. A user can control the power outlets and the dimming light with an IR remote control of any home appliance. Our proposed room architecture provides the remote-controllable and energy-saving room.

TL;DR: This paper explores current perspectives in power consumption for next generation networks, and provides a detailed survey on emerging technologies, projects, and work-in-progress standards, which can be adopted in networks and related infrastructures in order to reduce their carbon footprint.
Abstract: The concept of energy-efficient networking has begun to spread in the past few years, gaining increasing popularity. Besides the widespread sensitivity to ecological issues, such interest also stems from economic needs, since both energy costs and electrical requirements of telcos' and Internet Service Providers' infrastructures around the world show a continuously growing trend. In this respect, a common opinion among networking researchers is that the sole introduction of low consumption silicon technologies may not be enough to effectively curb energy requirements. Thus, for disruptively boosting the network energy efficiency, these hardware enhancements must be integrated with ad-hoc mechanisms that explicitly manage energy saving, by exploiting network-specific features. This paper aims at providing a twofold contribution to green networking. At first, we explore current perspectives in power consumption for next generation networks. Secondly, we provide a detailed survey on emerging technologies, projects, and work-in-progress standards, which can be adopted in networks and related infrastructures in order to reduce their carbon footprint. The considered approaches range from energy saving techniques for networked hosts, to technologies and mechanisms for designing next-generation and energy-aware networks and networking equipment.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for modifying an image is presented, which consists of displaying an image, the image comprising a portion of an object; determining if an edge of the object is in a location within the portion; and detecting movement in a member direction, of an operating member with respect to the edge.
Abstract: A method is provided for modifying an image. The method comprises displaying an image, the image comprising a portion of an object; and determining if an edge of the object is in a location within the portion. The method further comprises detecting movement, in a member direction, of an operating member with respect to the edge. The method still further comprises moving, if the edge is not in the location, the object in an object direction corresponding to the detected movement; and modifying, if the edge is in the location, the image in response to the detected movement, the modified image comprising the edge in the location.

TL;DR: This paper provides a comprehensive review on previous and current research related to the HEMS by considering various DR programs, smart technologies, and load scheduling controllers.
Abstract: The increasing demand for electricity and the emergence of smart grids have presented new opportunities for a home energy management system (HEMS) that can reduce energy usage. The HEMS incorporates a demand response (DR) tool that shifts and curtails demand to improve home energy consumption. This system commonly creates optimal consumption schedules by considering several factors, such as energy costs, environmental concerns, load profiles, and consumer comfort. With the deployment of smart meters, performing load control using the HEMS with DR-enabled appliances has become possible. This paper provides a comprehensive review on previous and current research related to the HEMS by considering various DR programs, smart technologies, and load scheduling controllers. The application of artificial intelligence for load scheduling controllers, such as artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system, is also reviewed. Heuristic optimization techniques, which are widely used for optimal scheduling of various electrical devices in a smart home, are also discussed.

Abstract: Smart Home minimizes user's intervention in monitoring home settings and controlling home appliances. This paper presents an approach to the development of Smart Home applications by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) with Web services and Cloud computing. The approach focuses on: (1) embedding intelligence into sensors and actuators using Arduino platform, (2) networking smart things using Zigbee technology, (3) facilitating interactions with smart things using Cloud services, (4) improving data exchange efficiency using JSON data format. Moreover, we implement three use cases to demonstrate the approach's feasibility and efficiency, i.e., measuring home conditions, monitoring home appliances, and controlling home access.
