TL;DR: In this article, an optimization model was proposed to be used in composite power system reliability evaluation method when employing a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and some probabilistic load point indices and system indices have been calculated in this approach.
Abstract: In recent years, growth of load demand increases day by day, but this growth does not happen the same in equipments of power systems and therefore operators have to use maximum available capacity of systems to satisfy load demands. These actions make power systems so unreliable. One of best ways to improve reliability of systems, is using FACTS devices. This paper proposes an optimization model to be use in composite power system reliability evaluation method when employing a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). Some probabilistic load point indices and system indices have been calculated in this approach. At last some comparisons has been done between the results achieved for STATCOM and UPFC when used in grid and original systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by applying to the 24 bus-IEEE reliability test system (IEEE-RTS).

TL;DR: In this paper, the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) load flow modelling is discussed to evaluate the total available capacity with each possible transmission line switching to determine the reliability condition of system network.
Abstract: As load demand is increasing, the existing power system network has to maintain its reliability. So to make system more reliable, FACTS devices are most commonly used in the system network. Here, Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) load flow modelling is discussed to evaluate the total available capacity with each possible transmission line switching to determine the reliability condition of system network. Capacity outage probability is used to estimate the reliability indices with respect to line switching and switching rate. Individual and cumulative probability are evaluated according to available and unavailable units forced outage rate (FOR). Reliability indices EDNS and LOLP are compared with incorporation of STATCOM with respect to base case. Voltage profile is major concern in power system network. STATCOM is more preferable FACTS device used in the system network buses for improving the voltage profile and making the system more secure. The 24 bus IEEE Reliability Test System (IEEE-RTS-1979) is simulate for evaluation and contrast of the reliability and power flow parameter. Load flow with STATCOM gives better results in terms of improved voltage profile and reduction in loss.

TL;DR: An attempt is made to study the impact of Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor & Unified Power Flow Controller combination on composite power system by using state space enumeration techniques and results show a significant improvement in the Load point, system indices, probability of failure & Expected Energy Not Supplied in all transmission lines & generation capacity.
Abstract: FACTS technologies can have major positive impacts on power system reliability performance and the actual benefits obtained can be assessed using suitable models and practice. Emerging techniques for composite power system reliability evaluation mainly focus on conventional generation and transmission facilities. In this paper, the impact of FACTS controllers on Composite Power System Reliability on IEEE 24 Bus Reliability Test System (RTS) is examined by incorporating the controller devices. A novel approach of composite power system has been presented by incorporating FACTS controllers in the RTS system in all the transmission lines for determining the system reliability. In this paper, an attempt is made to study the impact of Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) & Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) combination on composite power system by using state space enumeration techniques. In order to improve system performance the impact of the combination of TCSC & UPFC has been considered. Investigation results show a significant improvement in the Load point, system indices, probability of failure & Expected Energy Not Supplied (EENS) in all transmission lines & generation capacity.

TL;DR: A comparison is carried out between the systems using UPFC, TCSC in order to describe which FACTS device is best suitable for the system.
Abstract: Emerging techniques for composite power system reliability evaluation mainly focus on conventional generation and transmission facilities. Reliability analysis of composite power system is determined by applying the FACTS devices like UPFC & TCSC in IEEE 6 Bus RBTS system at different buses & transmission lines. In this paper, a comparison is carried out between the systems using UPFC, TCSC in order to describe which FACTS device is best suitable for the system. The comparison is made in different parameters via. availability & unavailability, System Indices, Probability of Failure & Expected Energy Not Supplied (EENS), by considering different modules & bus numbers of the composite power system. Keywords - UPFC, TCSC, Reliability, EENS, Probability of Failure, System Indices.
