Particle Stress in Bioreactors

TL;DR: The results of systematic investigations into the hydrodynamic stress on particles in stirred tanks, reactors with dominating boundary-layer flow, shake flasks, viscosimeters, bubble columns and gas-operated loop reactors permit fundamental conclusions on particle stress and the dimensions and selection of suitable bioreactors according to the criterion of particle stress.

Method of inactivating microorganisms in a fluid using ultraviolet radiation

TL;DR: In this article, a method of inactivating microorganisms such as viruses within a fluid such as a biological fluid is disclosed, which includes the steps of providing a UV reactor, which may take the form of an elongated generally annular reaction chamber surrounding at least one elongated UV lamp, moving the fluid within the reaction chamber in a primary flow directed along the length of the UV lamp and inducing a circulating secondary flow within the fluid with the secondary flow being superimposed on the primary flow.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mass transfer resistance of sterile plugs in shaking bioreactors

TL;DR: A new method was developed to obtain the mass transfer resistance of various sterile closures using the carbon dioxide diffusion coefficient, which revealed that this resistance is mainly dependent on the neck geometry and to a lesser extent on the plug material and density.
Journal ArticleDOI

Verfahrenstechnische Auslegungsunterlagen für Rührbehälter als Fermenter

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed and collected design data for stirring vessels for calculation of mass and heat transfer and the flooding point and stirrer power requirements for aerated liquids, including low-viscosity, higher viscosity, and structure viscoities liquids with difering coalescence behaviour.
Journal ArticleDOI

A new seed-train expansion method for recombinant mammalian cell lines

TL;DR: It was found that it was not necessary to include a wash step to remove DMSO prior to the inoculation and this `one-step'technology leads to a much more consistent scale-up by reducing manual operations and avoiding subjective decisions during the scale- up phase.
