Abstract: Hexynylcyanoketene (3) can be formed in situ by the pyrolysis of 2,5-diazido-3,6-dihexynyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2); the use of (3) in the preparation of hexynyl-substituted alkenes and heterocyclic compounds, e.g.β-lactam, is described.
