Experimental investigation of the effect of inclination angle on convection-driven melting of phase change material in a rectangular enclosure

Worldwide demand for robotic aircraft such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) is surging. Not only military but especially civil applications are being developed at a rapid pace. Unmanned vehicles offer major advantages when used for aerial surveillance, reconnaissance, and inspection in complex and inhospitable environments. UAVs are better suited for dirty or dangerous missions than manned aircraft and are more cost-effective. UAVs can operate in contaminated environments, for example, and at altitudes both lower and higher than those typically traversed by manned aircraft. Many technological, economic, and political factors have encouraged the development and operation of UAVs. New sensors, microprocessors, and propulsion systems are smaller, lighter, and more capable, leading to levels of endurance, efficiency, and autonomy that exceed human capacities. Comprising the latest research, this book describes step by step the development of small or miniature unmanned aerial vehicles and discusses in detail the integrated prototypes developed at the robotics laboratory of Chiba University. With demonstration videos, the book will interest not only graduate students, scientists, and engineers but also newcomers to the field.

Autonomous Flying Robots: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Micro Aerial Vehicles

Solar air heaters (SAHs) form the foremost component of solar energy utilization system. These air heaters absorb the irradiance and convert it into thermal energy at the absorbing surface and then transfer this energy to a fluid flowing through the collector. SAHs are inexpensive and most used collection devices because of their inherent simplicity. SAHs are found in several solar energy applications, especially for space heating, timber seasoning and agriculture drying. It has been observed by studying the previous literature that all the elements of a solar air heater such as; an absorber tray, the ducts, glazing, insulation, extended surfaces, as well as the tilt angle, have a significant effect on the thermal performance of the system. This review article focus on the developments that has followed round the globe in various aspects of solar air heating systems since 1877 up to now, with a glimpse of some novel patents of SAHs. The various methods that are used to improve the thermal performance of SAHs such as; optimizing the dimensions of the air heater construction elements, use of extended surfaces with different shapes and dimensions, use of sensible or latent storage media, use of concentrators to augment the available solar radiation, integrating photovoltaic elements with the heaters, etc, are also reported. Besides this, some benefits by using the SAHs has been discussed.

A pre-emptive maintenance system for performing maintenance and process assurance on run-critical equipment employs an intrinsic health monitor that includes a number of sensors that are used with an operating equipment or machine to generate a set of intrinsic physical signatures that are products of the primary performance characteristics of the operating equipment These signatures are nonfunctional parametrics that are consistent and reliable indicators of the normal operation of the equipment and statistical norms are set during an initial learning mode using neural processors and the outputs from the sensors Thereafter, the sensor outputs are monitored and analyzed using the statistical norms to predict the probabilities of future failures of the operating equipment By using the intrinsic health monitor an advance in the field of equipment maintenance and process assurance is provided in the approach to maintenance being a pre-emptive procedure
