Journal ArticleDOI
Amplified trace gas removal in the troposphere.
Andreas Hofzumahaus,Franz Rohrer,Keding Lu,Keding Lu,Birger Bohn,Theo Brauers,Chih-Chung Chang,Hendrik Fuchs,Frank Holland,Kazuyuki Kita,Yutaka Kondo,Xin Li,Xin Li,Shengrong Lou,Shengrong Lou,Min Shao,Limin Zeng,Andreas Wahner,Yuanhang Zhang +18 more
TL;DR: Concentrations of OH were three to five times greater than expected, and the existence of a pathway for the regeneration of OH independent of NO is proposed, which amplifies the degradation of pollutants without producing ozone.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nitrate radicals and biogenic volatile organic compounds: oxidation, mechanisms, and organic aerosol
Nga L. Ng,Steven S. Brown,Steven S. Brown,Alexander T. Archibald,Elliot Atlas,Ronald C. Cohen,John Crowley,Douglas A. Day,Douglas A. Day,Neil M. Donahue,Juliane L. Fry,Hendrik Fuchs,Robert J. Griffin,Marcelo I. Guzman,Hartmut Herrmann,Alma Hodzic,Yoshiteru Iinuma,Jose L. Jimenez,Jose L. Jimenez,Astrid Kiendler-Scharr,Ben H. Lee,Deborah Luecken,Jingqiu Mao,Jingqiu Mao,Jingqiu Mao,Robert McLaren,Anke Mutzel,Hans D. Osthoff,Bin Ouyang,Bénédicte Picquet-Varrault,Ulrich Platt,Havala O. T. Pye,Yinon Rudich,Rebecca H. Schwantes,Manabu Shiraiwa,Jochen Stutz,Joel A. Thornton,Andreas Tilgner,Brent J. Williams,Rahul A. Zaveri +39 more
TL;DR: Impacts of NO3-BVOC chemistry on air quality and climate are outlined, and critical research needs to better constrain this interaction to improve the predictive capabilities of atmospheric models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aging of biogenic secondary organic aerosol via gas-phase OH radical reactions
Neil M. Donahue,Kaytlin M. Henry,Thomas F. Mentel,Astrid Kiendler-Scharr,C. Spindler,Birger Bohn,Theo Brauers,Hans P. Dorn,Hendrik Fuchs,Ralf Tillmann,Andreas Wahner,Harald Saathoff,Karl-Heinz Naumann,Ottmar Möhler,Thomas Leisner,Lars Peter Müller,Marc-Christopher Reinnig,Thorsten Hoffmann,Kent Salo,Mattias Hallquist,Mia Frosch,Merete Bilde,Torsten Tritscher,Peter Barmet,Arnaud P. Praplan,Peter F. DeCarlo,Josef Dommen,André S. H. Prévôt,Urs Baltensperger +28 more
TL;DR: The effect of OH aging is isolated, confirming the hypothesis that hydroxyl radical (OH) aging significantly increases the concentration of first-generation biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA), and can be described by a mechanism suitable for implementation in models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Organic nitrate and secondary organic aerosol yield from NO 3 oxidation of β-pinene evaluated using a gas-phase kinetics/aerosol partitioning model
Juliane L. Fry,Astrid Kiendler-Scharr,A. W. Rollins,Paul J. Wooldridge,Steven S. Brown,Hendrik Fuchs,William P. Dubé,A. Mensah,M. Dal Maso,Ralf Tillmann,H.-P. Dorn,Theo Brauers,Ronald C. Cohen +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the yields of organic nitrates and of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particle formation were measured for the reaction NO3+β-pinene under dry and humid conditions in the atmosphere simulation chamber SAPHIR at Research Center Julich.
Journal ArticleDOI
Radical chemistry at a rural site (Wangdu) in the North China Plain: observation and model calculations of OH, HO 2 and RO 2 radicals
Zhaofeng Tan,Hendrik Fuchs,Keding Lu,Andreas Hofzumahaus,Birger Bohn,Sebastian Broch,Huabin Dong,Sebastian Gomm,Rolf Häseler,Ling-Yan He,Frank Holland,Xin Li,Xin Li,Ying Liu,Sihua Lu,Franz Rohrer,Min Shao,Baolin Wang,Ming Wang,Yusheng Wu,Limin Zeng,Yinsong Zhang,Andreas Wahner,Yuanhang Zhang,Yuanhang Zhang +24 more
TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive field campaign was carried out in summer 2014 in Wangdu, located in the North China Plain, where a month of continuous OH, HO2 and RO2 measurements was achieved.
