Journal ArticleDOI
Relation of Low Body Mass to Death and Stroke in the Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program
Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller,Cathy S.J. Fann,Richard M. Allman,Henry R. Black,Greta Camel,Barry R. Davis,Kamal Masaki,Sarah Pressel,Ronald J. Prineas,Jeremiah Stamler,Thomas M. Vogt +10 more
TL;DR: Among older patients with hypertension, a wide range of BMIs was associated with a similar risk of death and stroke; a low BMI was associatedwith increased risk.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pharmacogenetic Association of the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Insertion/Deletion Polymorphism on Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Risk in Relation to Antihypertensive Treatment The Genetics of Hypertension-Associated Treatment (GenHAT) Study
Donna K. Arnett,Barry R. Davis,Charles E. Ford,Eric Boerwinkle,Cathie Leiendecker-Foster,Michael B. Miller,Henry R. Black,John H. Eckfeldt +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the ACE I/D polymorphism is not a useful marker to predict antihypertensive treatment response, and was not a predictor of CHD, nor did it modify the response to antihyertensive treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
The paradigm has shifted to systolic blood pressure.
TL;DR: Three trials of older individuals with isolated systolic hypertension, unambiguously demonstrated that effective antihypertensive therapy lowered the rate of strokes, heart failure, CHD, and even all-cause mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulse pressure and risk of cardiovascular events in the systolic hypertension in the elderly program
Viola Vaccarino,Alan K. Berger,Jerome L. Abramson,Henry R. Black,John F. Setaro,Janice A. Davey,Harlan M. Krumholz +6 more
TL;DR: Pulse pressure is a useful marker of risk for HF and stroke among older adults being treated for isolated systolic hypertension, and is not significantly associated with HF or stroke in the placebo group, nor with incidence of CHD in either the placebo or treatment group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Valsartan, a new angiotensin II antagonist for the treatment of essential hypertension: efficacy, tolerability and safety compared to an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, lisinopril
TL;DR: Valsartan provides a new antihypertensive agent with comparable efficacy to lisinopril and appears to be associated with a reduced incidence of cough.
