Abstract: Quantitative languages are an extension of boolean languages that assign to each word a real number. Mean-payoff automata are finite automata with numerical weights on transitions that assign to each infinite path the long-run average of the transition weights. When the mode of branching of the automaton is deterministic, nondeterministic, or alternating, the corresponding class of quantitative languages is not robust as it is not closed under the pointwise operations of max, min, sum, and numerical complement. Nondeterministic and alternating mean-payoff automata are not decidable either, as the quantitative generalization of the problems of universality and language inclusion is undecidable. We introduce a new class of quantitative languages, defined by mean-payoff automaton expressions, which is robust and decidable: it is closed under the four pointwise operations, and we show that all decision problems are decidable for this class. Mean-payoff automaton expressions subsume deterministic meanpayoff automata, and we show that they have expressive power incomparable to nondeterministic and alternating mean-payoff automata. We also present for the first time an algorithm to compute distance between two quantitative languages, and in our case the quantitative languages are given as mean-payoff automaton expressions.

Abstract: The skin of a set of weighted points in ld is defined as a differentiable and orientable (d}- 1)-manifold surrounding the points. The skin varies continuously with the points and weights and at all times maintains the homotopy equivalence between the dual shape of the points and the body enclosed by the skin. The variation allows for arbitrary changes in topological connectivity, each accompanied by a momentary violation of the manifold property. The skin has applications to molecular modeling and docking and to geometric metamorphosis.

Abstract: This paper offers combinatorial results on extremum problems concerning the number of tetrahedra in a tetrahedrization of n points in general position in three dimensions, i.e. such that no four points are coplanar. It also presents an algorithm that in O(nlog n) time constructs a tetrahedrization of a set of n points consisting of at most 3n–11 tetrahedra.

Abstract: The main result of this paper is an extension of de Silva's Weak Delaunay Theorem to smoothly embedded curves and surfaces in Euclidean space. Assuming a sufficiently fine sampling, we prove that i + 1 points in the sample span an i-simplex in the restricted Delaunay triangulation iff every subset of the i + 1 points has a weak witness.

Abstract: A non-vertical hyperplane h, disjoint from a finite set P of points, partitions P into two sets P+ = P∩h+ and P- = P∩h - called semispaces of P, where h+ is the open half-space above hyperplane h and h- is the open half-space below h. Note that this definition includes the empty set and P itself as semispaces of P. Using geometric transformations and the face counting formulas for arrangements of hyper planes presented in Chapter 1, it is not hard to find tight upper bounds on the number of semispaces of P that depend solely on the cardinality of P. Unfortunately, little is known about the maximum number of semispaces with some fixed cardinality. This chapter addresses the latter counting problem and derives non-trivial upper and lower bounds.
