The quantum theory of light.

We present a theoretical and experimental study of polarization spectroscopy of rubidium atoms. All of the populations of the magnetic sublevels were calculated from the rate equations and used in the calculation of the polarization spectroscopy spectra. Using this model, we could generate theoretical line shapes of the polarization spectra on the ${D}_{2}$ transitions of rubidium atoms. The experimental results demonstrated that our model accurately reproduced spectra for all transitions in hyperfine structures.

Polarization spectroscopy of rubidium atoms: Theory and experiment

We present analytic solutions for saturated absorption spectra. The analytic forms of all the ground- and excited-state populations were obtained, and the absorption of a counterpropagating probe beam was calculated by solving the rate equations in the presence of a pump laser beam. The analytic solutions were compared with the numerical, experimental results, and Nakayama's model and good agreement was found between them. We found that the analytic theory could provide accurate spectra at an arbitrary pump beam intensity and diameter.

Analytic solutions for the saturated absorption spectra

We conducted a theoretical and experimental study of lineshape in modulation transfer spectroscopy for ⁸⁷Rb atoms. When a linearly polarized pump beam, modulated at an angular frequency of Ω, overlaps in parallel with an unmodulated linearly polarized probe beam, combined modulated probe beams are generated via nonlinear interaction with atoms. The detected modulation transfer signals are calculated by numerically solving the complete optical Bloch equations for the ⁸⁷Rb atoms without the use of any phenomenological parameters. We find that the calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results.

Modulation transfer spectroscopy for ⁸⁷Rb atoms: theory and experiment.

We have observed spontaneous symmetry breaking of the population of Brownian particles between two moving potentials in the spatiotemporally symmetric system. Cold atoms preferentially occupy one of the dynamic double-well potentials, produced in the parametrically driven dissipative magneto-optical trap far from equilibrium, above a critical number of atoms. We find that the population asymmetry, which may be interpreted as the biased Brownian motion, can be qualitatively described by the mean-field Ising-class phase transition. This in situ study may be useful for investigation of dynamic phase transition or temporal behavior of critical phenomena.
