Abstract: Some of the R & D activities by Nippon Steel on the application of titanium materials for automobile parts were introduced. Regarding exhaust pipes and mufflers, various material data needed to successfully handle commercially pure titanium was extensively accumulated while the manufacturing process by which products can show high performance inherent in titanium such as surface appearances was established. Regarding engine valves, both intake and exhaust valves having high wear resistance, high fatigue strength and high heat resistance were developed, which can be applied even in motorcycles with higher power engines. As a result of those activities, a lot of advantages of titanium usage including lightweight and high strength have become utilized in both many motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles. In addition, to further enhance the use of titanium in automobiles, low-cost alloys such as Super-TIX series were newly developed, and it is strongly expected that more automobile parts will be made of titanium and its alloys in the very near future.

TL;DR: In this paper, the microstructural change during STA process of Ti-5.5Al-1Fe, one of the low cost substitutes for Ti-6Al-4V, is examined and compared to that of Ti−6Al−4V.
Abstract: Solution treatment and aging (STA) after hot working in the α+β region has been widely used as an effective strengthening method for α+β titanium alloys. In the first part of the paper, microstructural change during STA process of Ti–5.5Al–1Fe, one of the low cost substitutes for Ti–6Al–4V, is examined and compared to that of Ti–6Al–4V. The main phase transformation contributing to strengthening of Ti–5.5Al–1Fe is the martensite transformation on quenching from the solution treatment temperature and stabilization during aging, which is basically the same as that of Ti–6Al–4V. Some inherent microstructures are also observed in the Ti–5.5Al–1Fe, such as the isolated β phase in the α grains, the traces of the ω phase in this β phase, the FeTi formation in the materials aged for longer times, etc. In the second half of the paper, a new thermochemical process is proposed, in which less amount of hydrogen is used and extremely brittle hydride is not needed. In this process, hydrogen is used to lower the Ms temperature and increase hardenability, which temporarily converts an α+β alloy to a β alloy and makes it possible for the fine acicular α phase to directly precipitate in the β matrix. Mechanical properties of the dehydrogenated material are excellent compared to the materials having so-called β annealed structures.

TL;DR: In the field of automobiles, titanium found its first application to the engine parts of racing cars early in the 1980s as mentioned in this paper, and since then, the application range of titanium has expanded, including the application of titanium to the mufflersystems of super sport-type bikes and limited models of high-grade cars.
Abstract: In the field of automobiles, titanium found its first application to the engine parts of racing cars early in the 1980s. Since then, the application range of titanium has expanded, including the application to the mufflersystems of super sport-type bikes and limited models of high-grade cars. This paper describes the study being made on titanium applications to automotive components which is a new prospective field of application, and the problems involved in titanium application to high-grade mass-produced cars.

TL;DR: In this article, the radio tag doubles the transmitted frequency and returns the processed signal to a transceiver typically located on the player, and the currently transmitted frequency is then compared with the received frequency to obtain a difference frequency from which an apparatus may estimate the distance.
Abstract: Systems, apparatuses, and methods estimate the distance between a player and a ball by transmitting a chirp (sweep signal) to a radio tag located on the ball. During the chirp, the frequency of the transmitted signal is changed in a predetermined fashion. The radio tag doubles the transmitted frequency and returns the processed signal to a transceiver typically located on the player. The currently transmitted frequency is then compared with the received frequency to obtain a difference frequency from which an apparatus may estimate the distance. The apparatus may simultaneously receive the processed signal from the radio tag while transmitting the sweep signal.

TL;DR: In this paper, a hand held dental instrument for curing light-curable compounds comprises a housing and an array of solid state, light emitting junctions or dies for generating light having wavelengths within a narrow band of wavelengths (e.g. 400-500 nm).
Abstract: A hand held dental instrument for curing light-curable compounds comprises a housing and an array of solid state, light emitting junctions or dies for generating light having wavelengths within a narrow band of wavelengths (e.g. 400-500 nm). Preferably, a peak wavelength of 470 nm is generated. The device further comprises an optical fiber light pipe for capturing the light and transmitting a beam of the light to a work surface containing a light-curable compound. An optical lens or lenses may be used for focusing the light into the light pipe.

TL;DR: In this article, a graphics processing system includes a graphics processor and a memory for storing data to be used by and generated by the graphics processor, which is used in a subsequent rendering pass.
Abstract: A graphics processing system includes a graphics processor and a memory for storing data to be used by and generated by the graphics processor. In a first rendering pass, the graphics processor generates an array of graphics data and stores the generated array of graphics data in the memory. The array of graphics data generated in the first rendering pass is used in a subsequent rendering pass. In the first rendering pass, the graphics processor determines one or more regions of the array of graphics data that have a particular characteristic, and generates information indicative of the one or more regions. In the subsequent rendering pass, the graphics processor uses the information indicative of the one or more regions to control the reading of the array of graphics data when it is to be used in the subsequent rendering pass.
