Abstract: The optimum process design for a heat exchanger type of reactor is derived through a selection of process conditions which give the minimum volume of reactor for a fixed conversion of a particular reactant. The method is illustrated by calculations on an ammonia synthesis reactor using an analog computer equipped with a bi-variant function generator.
