Power Aware Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

The past few years have witnessed increased interest in the potential use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in a wide range of applications and it has become a hot research area. Based on network structure, routing protocols in WSNs can be divided into two categories: flat routing and hierarchical or clustering routing. Owing to a variety of advantages, clustering is becoming an active branch of routing technology in WSNs. In this paper, we present a comprehensive and fine grained survey on clustering routing protocols proposed in the literature for WSNs. We outline the advantages and objectives of clustering for WSNs, and develop a novel taxonomy of WSN clustering routing methods based on complete and detailed clustering attributes. In particular, we systematically analyze a few prominent WSN clustering routing protocols and compare these different approaches according to our taxonomy and several significant metrics. Finally, we summarize and conclude the paper with some future directions.

Clustering in sensor networks

Wireless sensor network (WSN) brings a new paradigm of real-time embedded systems with limited computation, communication, memory, and energy resources that are being used for huge range of applications where the traditional infrastructure-based network is mostly infeasible. The sensor nodes are densely deployed in a hostile environment to monitor, detect, and analyze the physical phenomenon and consume considerable amount of energy while transmitting the information. It is impractical and sometimes impossible to replace the battery and to maintain longer network life time. So, there is a limitation on the lifetime of the battery power and energy conservation is a challenging issue. Appropriate cluster head (CH) election is one such issue, which can reduce the energy consumption dramatically. Low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) is the most famous hierarchical routing protocol, where the CH is elected in rotation basis based on a probabilistic threshold value and only CHs are allowed to send the information to the base station (BS). But in this approach, a super-CH (SCH) is elected among the CHs who can only send the information to the mobile BS by choosing suitable fuzzy descriptors, such as remaining battery power, mobility of BS, and centrality of the clusters. Fuzzy inference engine (Mamdani’s rule) is used to elect the chance to be the SCH. The results have been derived from NS-2 simulator and show that the proposed protocol performs better than the LEACH protocol in terms of the first node dies, half node alive, better stability, and better lifetime.

A Fuzzy Logic-Based Clustering Algorithm for WSN to Extend the Network Lifetime

Energy efficiency is one of the main issues that will drive the design of fog-supported wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Indeed, the behavior of such networks becomes very unstable in node's heterogeneity and/or node's failure. In WSNs, clusters are dynamically built up by neighbor nodes, to save energy and prolong the network lifetime. One of the nodes plays the role of Cluster Head (CH) that is responsible for transferring data among the neighboring sensors. Due to pervasive use of WSNs, finding an energy-efficient policy to opt CHs in the WSNs has become increasingly important. Due to this motivations, in this paper, a modified Stable Election Protocol (SEP), named Prolong-SEP (P-SEP) is presented to prolong the stable period of Fog-supported sensor networks by maintaining balanced energy consumption. P-SEP enables uniform nodes distribution, new CH selecting policy, and prolong the time interval of the system, especially before the failure of the first node. P-SEP considers two-level nodes' heterogeneities: advanced and normal nodes. In P-SEP, the advanced and normal nodes have the opportunity to become CHs. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by varying the various parameters of the network in comparison with other state-of-the-art cluster-based routing protocols. The simulation results point out that, by varying the initial energy and node heterogeneity parameters, the network lifetime of P-SEP improved by 31, 29, 20 and 40 % in comparison with SEP, Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy with Deterministic Cluster-Head Selection (LEACH-DCHS), Modified SEP (M-SEP) and an efficient modified SEP (EM-SEP), respectively.

P-SEP: a prolong stable election routing algorithm for energy-limited heterogeneous fog-supported wireless sensor networks

Clustering is an effective approach for organizing a network into a connected hierarchy, load balancing, and prolonging the network lifetime. On the other hand, fuzzy logic is capable of wisely blending different parameters. This paper proposes an energy-aware distributed dynamic clustering protocol (ECPF) which applies three techniques: (1) non-probabilistic cluster head (CH) elections, (2) fuzzy logic, and (3) on demand clustering. The remaining energy of the nodes is the primary parameter for electing tentative CHs via a non-probabilistic fashion. A non-probabilistic CH election is implemented by introducing a delay inversely proportional to the residual energy of each node. Therefore, tentative CHs are selected based on their remaining energy. In addition, fuzzy logic is employed to evaluate the fitness (cost) of a node in order to choose a final CH from the set of neighboring tentative CHs. On the other hand, every regular (non CH) node elects to connect to the CH with the least fuzzy cost in its neighborhood. Besides, in ECPF, CH elections are performed sporadically (in contrast to performing it every round). Simulation results demonstrate that our approach performs better than well known protocols (LEACH, HEED, and CHEF) in terms of extending network lifetime and saving energy.

An energy-aware distributed clustering protocol in wireless sensor networks using fuzzy logic

Clustering sensor nodes is an effective topology control for increasing network lifetime and scalability. It also, balances the load on the sensor nodes. HEED is a well known distributed clustering protocol that uses both energy and communication cost to elect Cluster Heads (CHs) in a probabilistic way. This paper improves HEED protocol using fuzzy logic and a non probabilistic approach for CH election. Fuzzy logic control is capable of making wisely decisions from blending different environmental parameters. The protocol uses nodes remaining energy and two fuzzy descriptors, node degree and node centrality, to elect CHs. On the other hand, the probabilistic model of HEED for electing tentative CHs is eliminated by introducing delay, inversely proportional to the nodes residual energy, for each node. Therefore, tentative CHs are selected according to their priority. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach performs better than HEED in terms of network lifetime and also cluster formation.

Improving on HEED protocol of wireless sensor networks using non probabilistic approach and fuzzy logic (HEED-NPF)

Clustering is an effective approach for organizing the network into a connected hierarchy, load balancing, and prolonging network lifetime. Clustering protocols in wireless sensor networks are classified into static and dynamic. In static clustering, clusters are formed once, forever and role of the cluster head is scheduled among the nodes in a cluster. However, in dynamic clustering the time is divided into rounds and clustering is performed in the beginning of each round. This paper presents a Hybrid Clustering Approach (HCA). Whenever a cluster head consumes a prespecified part of its energy, it indirectly informs all other nodes so, clustering will be done in the beginning of the upcoming round. Therefore, clustering is performed on demand. To evaluate the efficiency of proposal, the well known distributed clustering protocol, HEED, is used as baseline example. By means of simulation results, we demonstrate that significant energy saving can be achieved using HCA.

A hybrid clustering approach for prolonging lifetime in wireless sensor networks

Organizing sensor networks into clustered architectures is an effective approach for load balancing, and prolonging the network lifetime. This paper proposes a Distributed Energy Efficient Scheme to Cluster Wireless Sensor Networks (DESC). This protocol achieves energy efficiency using two techniques: on demand clustering and a multi-criteria cluster formation. Whenever a cluster head consumes a prespecified part of its energy, it indirectly informs other nodes to hold cluster head elections for the upcoming round. Therefore, clustering is performed sporadically (in contrast to performing it every round). In DESC, a node with higher amount of remaining energy is considered a more eligible candidate for election as a cluster head. Besides, each node computes a multi-criteria cost, and a regular (non-cluster head) node elects the cluster head with the most cost to connect to. Simulation results show that the protocol outperforms HEED and LEACH protocols in terms of network lifetime and energy savings.

DESC: distributed energy efficient scheme to cluster wireless sensor networks

Clustering is a promising solution to conserve sensor energy levels and to organize tasks among nodes. This paper presents a distributed energy efficient protocol to cluster wireless sensor networks using two techniques: local re-clustering and multi-criteria cluster formation. When a Cluster Head (CH) maintains an acceptable part of its remaining energy, it is not necessary to cooperate in consecutive clustering processes (global re-clustering). However, most of the previous algorithms have not considered the energy harvesting attained from local re-clustering, which is the process of selecting a new CH only when the previous CH has consumed a prespecified part of its energy. Besides, each node computes a multi-criteria score for being selected as a CH and running a round. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol prolongs the lifetime of WSNs by decreasing clustering overhead.
