Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate in vitro anti-oxidant and anti-neuro-inflammatory activities of Suaeda japonica extract (SJE) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. Methods: 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay was used to study the antioxidant effects. 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5- diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to study cell viabilities. LPS-stimulated BV- microglial cells were used to study the gene expression and production of inflammatory mediators determined by Western blot analysis. Results: SJE significantly inhibited the DPPH generated free radicals, and suppressed LPS-induced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and production of nitric oxide (NO) in a concentration-dependent manner. It decreased LPS-induced expression of some inflammatory mediators and pro-inflammatory cytokines (cyclooxygenase-2 and interleukin (IL)-6). This suppression of inflammatory mediators was nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB)-dependent. Conclusion: Our findings imply that SJE may be a potential therapeutic agent in regulating microgliamediated neuroinflammatory responses observed in several neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to measure and compare polyphenol content, antioxidant, and antiinflammatory activity of six halophytes (Limonium tetragonum, Suaeda glauca, Suaeda japonica, Salicornia europaea, Triglochin maritimum, and Sonchus brachyotus). Depending on the total polyphenol content, the plants were categorized into two groups: (1) a high total polyphenol content group that included L. tetragonum, S. brachyotus, and S. europaea, and, (2) a low total polyphenol content group consisting of S. glauca, T. maritima, and S. japonica. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays, and by measuring ROS. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by measuring NO and PGE2. L. tetragonum and S. brachyotus, that have high polyphenol content, also showed strong antioxidant activity. In addition, L. tetragonum, S. brachyotus, and S. europaea showed good anti-inflammatory activity. Consequently, the total polyphenol content was thought to be related to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, S. brachyotus and L. tetragonum are good candidates for use in pharmaceuticals and functional foods.

Abstract: More than 100 species of annual herb genus Suaeda widely distribute (Asia, North America, northern Africa and Europe), are rich in resources (about hundreds of millions of tons/Y) and have a long historical application. Most of them are mainly used for traditional food, feed and medicine. Recently, they have been employed to repair saline-alkali land and beautify the environment. So far, only 27 species have been reported on the bioactivity diversity, broad spectrum and effectiveness in clinical practice. Therefore, the in-depth and extensive research of Suaeda has become a research hotspot around the world. However, only one review summarized the nutritional, chemical and biological values of Suaeda. By searching the international authoritative databases (ACS Publications, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Springer, web of Science and Bing International etc.) and collecting 103 literatures closely related to Suaeda (1895-2021), herewith a comprehensive and systematic review was conducted on the phytology, chemistry, pharmacology and clinical application, enveloping the classification evolution between Amaranthaceae and Chenopodiaceae, distribution and common botanical characteristics; involving 9 chemical categories of 163 derivatives covering 14 new and 6 first-isolated ones, and appraising the content determination of 6 categories of components; mainly including the pharmacology of 13 species in vivo and vitro; estimating the clinical application of 16 species cured the related diseases of eight human physiological system except for the motor system. It is expected that this paper will provide forward-looking scientific ideas and literature support for the further modern research, development and utilization of the genus.

Abstract: 염생식물이란 육상식물이 서식할 수 없는 고농도의 염분을 함 유하는 해안가, 염분이 있는 호숫가, 암염이 있는 지대 및 만조 때 침수되는 낮은 지대에 서식하는 식물을 말한다(Lee et al., 2012). 이와 같은 염생식물은 육상식물과 달리 해수와 담수의 끊임없는 교차로 인한 염분농도의 잦은 변화와 장기간 침수되 는 환경에서 고농도의 염분을 이용한 삼투압 조절로 세포기능 보호 등 다양한 자기방어 기작을 가진다(Kong et al., 2008). 이 러한 극한환경에 서식하는 염생식물들은 페놀성 화합물을 포함 한 2차 대사산물과 같은 특이적인 생리활성물질들을 다량 함유 하고 있다고 보고되어 있으며, 이를 이용한 약리학적 기능에 대 한 연구가 진행되어 왔으나, 아직까지 미비한 실정이다. 염생식물의 일종인 칠면초(Suaeda japonica)는 명아주과 (Chenopodiaceae)의 일년생 식물로 세계적으로 구분된 해안식 생 중 Sino-Japanese group의 대표 종으로 우리나라에서는 예 부터 식용으로 사용하였으며, 낮게 침수되는 지대부터 건조한 지역까지 서식하며 특히 서해안 갯벌지역에 넓게 분포되어 있 다(Cho et al., 2014). 선행연구에 따르면 칠면초는 항산화(Lee et al., 2012; Lee et al., 2011), 신경염증질병(Kang et al., 2013) 및 간보호(Kim et al., 2010) 에 효능이 있다고 보고된 바 있으 며 한방에서는 해열효과가 있어 식물성 소금 및 천연염료로 사 용하고 있다(Choi et al., 2010; Choi et al., 2009). 반면, 칠면초 가 유용한 생리활성물질을 가짐에도 불구하고 고농도의 염으로 인해 약리학적 이용에 제약을 받고 있다. 염은 세포외액에서 가장 많이 존재하는 전해질로, 체내에서 삼투압(osmolarity)조절, 수분균형과 체액의 양조절, pH조절 및 신경전달 물질 등의 역할을 하는 중요한 인자이다. 그러나 과 도한 염 섭취는 체내에 불균형을 유발하며, 혈액량을 증가시켜 고혈압(hypertension)을 초래하거나 혈중 나트륨농도가 높아 전기투석시스템을 활용한 염생식물 칠면초(Suaeda japonica) 추출물의 염분 표준화에 따른 주요 성분 및 생리활성 비교 연구 박현호·고석천·정원교*
