TL;DR: The fabrication by domain engineering of high quality periodically poled LiNbO₃, co-doped with Nd³⁺ and Mg²⁺, which combines a laser medium and a high efficiency second harmonic conversion crystal into a single system that is designed to overcome the above problems.
Abstract: Although a breakthrough in the fabrication of green laser diodes has occurred, the high costs associated with the difficulty of manufacture still present a great obstacle for its practical application. Another approach for producing a green laser, by combining a laser device and a nonlinear crystal, entails the fabrication of complex structures and exhibits unstable performance due to interface contact defects, thus limiting its application. In this work, we report the fabrication by domain engineering of high quality periodically poled LiNbO₃, co-doped with Nd³⁺ and Mg²⁺, which combines a laser medium and a high efficiency second harmonic conversion crystal into a single system that is designed to overcome the above problems. An 80 mW self-frequency doubling green laser was constructed for the first time from a periodically poled Nd:Mg:LiNbO₃ crystal of 16 mm in length. This crystal can be used for developing compact, stable, highly efficient mini-solid-state-lasers, which promise to have many applications in portable laser-based spectroscopy, photo-communications, terahertz wave generation, and laser displays.

TL;DR: The results showed that the 3D-QSAR models are reliable and can be extended to design new antiarrhythmic agents and could describe the steric, electrostatic, and hydrophobic requirements for recognition forces of the receptor site.
Abstract: Class III antiarrhythmic agents selectively delay the effective refractory period (ERP) and increase the transmembrane action potential duration (APD). Using dofetilide (2) as a template of class III antiarrhythmic agents, we designed and synthesized 16 methylsulfonamido phenylethylamine analogues (4a-d and 5a-l). Pharmacological assay indicated that all of these compounds showed activity for increasing the ERP in isolated animal atrium; among them, the effective concentration of compound 4a is 1.6 x 10(-8) mol/L in increasing ERP by 10 ms, slightly less potent than that of 2, 1.1 x 10(-8) mol/L. Compound 4a also produced a slightly lower change in ERP at 10(-5) M, DeltaERP% = 17.5% (DeltaERP% = 24.0% for dofetilide). On the basis of this bioassay result, these 16 compounds together with dofetilide were investigated by the three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) techniques of comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA), comparative molecular similarity index analysis (CoMSIA), and the hologram QSAR (HQSAR). The 3D-QSAR models were tested with another 11 compounds (4e-h and 5m-s) that we synthesized later. Results revealed that the CoMFA, CoMSIA, and HQSAR predicted activities for the 11 newly synthesized compounds that have a good correlation with their experimental value, r(2) = 0.943, 0.891, and 0.809 for the three QSAR models, respectively. This indicates that the 3D-QSAR models proved a good predictive ability and could describe the steric, electrostatic, and hydrophobic requirements for recognition forces of the receptor site. On the basis of these results, we designed and synthesized another eight new analogues of methanesulfonamido phenylethyamine (6a-h) according to the clues provided by the 3D-QSAR analyses. Pharmacological assay indicated that the effective concentrations of delaying the ERP by 10 ms of these newly designed compounds correlated well with the 3D-QSAR predicted values. It is remarkable that the percent change of delaying ERP at 10(-5) M compound 6c is much higher than that of dofetilide; the effective concentration of compound 6c is 5.0 x 10(-8)mol/L in increasing the ERP by 10 ms, which is slightly lower than that of 2. The results showed that the 3D-QSAR models are reliable and can be extended to design new antiarrhythmic agents.

TL;DR: A model used to quantitatively describe the temporal evolution of aero-optical effects caused by vortices in the supersonic mixing layer was developed and validated with data of numerical calculation and indicated that the model is available.
Abstract: The vortices inside mixing layers impose remarkable aero-optical distortions on a beam even at moderate subsonic speeds. Knowledge about aero-optical effects caused by vortices in the flow field, especially their spatial and temporal evolution, is limited for supersonic mixing layers because the flows have very high speeds. In this paper, the temporal evolution of aero-optical effects caused by vortices in the supersonic mixing layer was investigated. A large eddy simulation was used to simulate the supersonic flow. A novel approach, coordinate extraction of vortex core, which is based on the relationship between vortices and the profile of the optical path length over the flow field, was proposed to quantitatively calculate the radii and convective speeds of vortices. A model used to quantitatively describe the temporal evolution of aero-optical effects caused by vortices in the supersonic mixing layer was developed and validated with data of numerical calculation. The results indicated that the model is available. Finally, several conclusions drawn from this work were presented.

TL;DR: Li et al. as discussed by the authors presented a novel electrocatalyst based on binary nickel iron sulfide solid solution hybrid on carbon cloth for oxygen evolution reaction, which can achieve high catalytic reactivity with a low overpotential of 210 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2.
Abstract: Fabrication of high-activity electrocatalysts with operational stability is desperately needed to achieve efficient energy conversion. Herein, for the first time, we highlight a novel electrocatalyst based on binary nickel iron sulfide solid solution hybrids on carbon cloth for oxygen evolution reaction. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of varied phases and the interfacial connection between (Ni, Fe)S2 and (Ni, Fe)3S4 to accelerate the charge transport, the Ni incorporation to optimize the electronic structure of the hybrids and the downshift of the d-band center to facilitate the desorption of oxygen intermediates, the partial charge-transfer between Fe and Ni to boost the generation of catalytically active Ni3+ as well as the unique nanosphere structure to offer enough buffer area for the volume changes during constant redox reactions, the obtained binary nickel iron sulfide hybrids ((Ni, Fe)S2/(Ni, Fe)3S4) display high catalytic reactivity with a low overpotential of 210 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and excellent stability with negligible activity deterioration, making the hybrid a promising candidate for electrocatalytic alkaline water oxidation.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This Review describes how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics.
Abstract: Ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets of layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are fundamentally and technologically intriguing. In contrast to the graphene sheet, they are chemically versatile. Mono- or few-layered TMDs - obtained either through exfoliation of bulk materials or bottom-up syntheses - are direct-gap semiconductors whose bandgap energy, as well as carrier type (n- or p-type), varies between compounds depending on their composition, structure and dimensionality. In this Review, we describe how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications. They have been investigated as chemically active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and hydrosulfurization, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics. Their morphologies and properties are also useful for energy storage applications such as electrodes for Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
